Johnson & Johnson was founded in 1886 by pharmacist Robert Wood Johnson and his brothers James Wood Johnson and Edward Mead Johnson. They established the company after Joseph Lister published his research on airborne germs and infectious diseases and devised post-operative sterilization strategies and surgical dressings touted to be more effective than spraying operating rooms with carbolic acid.
