Summary:
TRIZ Advanced Manufacturing is an entity of TRIZ Engineering Services America LLC, with the mission of building quality sub-assemblies related to electric vehicle high voltage systems and wire harness assemblies. Our mission is to always provide the products that deliver the best value and complete solution for our customers.
The EV Powertrain Production Technician builds powertrain sub-systems (power cradle assemblies, power electronics modules, HV cabling/busbars, thermal sub-systems, battery packs, PDU/HVFB) to documented standards. Work is performed in a de-energized state with HV awareness and damage-prevention practices; an electrician license is not required.
Key Responsibilities:
- The EV Powertrain Production Technician assembles electric vehicle powertrain sub-systems up to vehicle-level builds while maintaining strict adherence to sequence of operations, quality standards, and work instructions. Additional duties include collaborating with engineering to provide feedback, troubleshooting assembly issues, and ensuring compliance with HV-aware safety practices.
- Assemble battery packs, power electronics (inverter/converter/MCU), PDU/HVFB, thermal components (heat pump, compressor, chillers, lines), and power cradle structures to specification.
- Perform precision mechanical and electrical build tasks: torque to spec, apply sealants/adhesives, install gaskets, route and secure HV cables/busbars with correct bend radius, strain relief, and protection.
- Execute in-process quality checks (visual/dimensional), and pre-power checks per work instruction (e.g., continuity/IR where applicable); document results and escalate anomalies.
- Handle lithium battery components and sensitive electronics using ESD controls, FOD prevention, and safe handling methods that avoid latent damage.
- Install cooling lines and components; support leak-prevention steps (e.g., O-ring lube, alignment, torque pattern) and basic leak checks per instruction.
- Troubleshoot minor assembly issues; perform approved rework/repairs and record dispositions in travelers or digital logs.
- Maintain accurate records of assembly tasks, test/inspection results, component usage, and serial/lot traceability.
- Operate and maintain tools/equipment (e.g., torque tools, crimpers, presses, presses for busbar insulators, labelers, diagnostic/continuity testers); verify calibration status before use.
- Follow 5S and standard work; keep workstations organized and ready; participate in continuous improvement and redline updates to work instructions.
- Collaborate with the Team Lead and engineering on manufacturability feedback, pilot/NPI builds, and process improvements.
- Pack completed assemblies with appropriate protection (ESD measures, blocking/bracing, dunnage) and prepare for shipment in crates, stillages, or other containers; seal using approved materials.
Requirements
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required, Associate’s degree or technical certification in Electrical Technology, Automotive Technology, Mechatronics, or a related field preferred.
- Certification in high-voltage awareness/safety or lithium-battery handling (e.g., HV safety training) preferred.
Experience:
- 2 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably assembly in the automotive or heavy-duty truck industry.
- Demonstrated ability to access and use basic computer applications related to position requirements (e.g., MS Office; basic use of SharePoint/MES for travelers or logs).
- Experience assembling electrical/mechanical components or exposure to EV/power electronics/battery systems preferred.
Skills:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, and detailed work instructions.
- Proficient in English (reading, speaking, and writing).
- Skilled use of torque tools, precision hand tools, crimping/termination tools, and basic diagnostic/continuity equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and technical aptitude; able to prevent damage to HV components and connectors during de-energized assembly.
- Effective communication and teamwork for collaboration with the Team Lead, engineers, and production teams.
- Working knowledge of HV-aware safety practices, ESD/FOD controls, quality documentation, and traceability requirements; familiarity with relevant standards (e.g., UL/SAE workmanship and safety) is a plus.
- Ability to adapt to evolving technologies and processes in a fast-paced EV manufacturing environment.
Work Environment:
- Primarily a lab and manufacturing floor setting within a heavy-duty truck production/support facility.
- Standard shift hours, typically Monday to Friday, with potential for overtime or flexible shifts to meet testing and production deadlines.
- Fast-paced, hands-on environment requiring management of multiple priorities and collaboration with team leads and engineers.
- Regular exposure to industrial areas and unpowered HV components; specialized PPE (e.g., safety glasses, gloves) and ESD controls are required per procedure.
Physical Requirements:
Describes the physical demands and environment of the job and lists the basic physical conditions needed to perform the job. Autocar provides reasonable accommodation for qualified people with disabilities.
- Walk, stand, sit, bend, twist/turn, kneel, squat, crawl.
- Climb using both legs and arms.
- Head/neck movement. Reach outward or above shoulder.
- Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
- Repetitive use of hands and fingers.
- Depth perceptions required.
- Ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of color.
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity for handling intricate components, connecting wiring, and reviewing technical schematics.
- Tolerance for working in an industrial environment with potential exposure to noise, chemicals, and high-voltage hazards, using appropriate PPE.
