Representative Duties

SCOPE OF DUTIES:

Conduct mental health screenings and risk assessments to identify student needs.

  • Evaluate students experiencing emotional, behavioral, academic, medical, or psychosocial difficulties.
  • Assess the urgency and level of care needed and determine appropriate interventions and referrals.
  • Identify students who may be at risk of harm to self or others and initiate appropriate response protocols.

Clinical Case Management and Care Coordination

  • Maintain an active caseload of students with complex needs requiring ongoing support and follow-up.
  • Develop individualized service plans to address barriers impacting student well-being and academic success.
  • Coordinate student care and support with campus departments including Student Health Services, Counseling, Disability Support Services, Student Equity and Achievement (SEA), Student Affairs, Campus Safety, and other appropriate programs.
  • Facilitate referrals and linkage to community providers, including mental health therapists, psychiatrists, hospitals, crisis stabilization units, intensive outpatient programs, substance use treatment providers, housing resources, and other specialized services.
  • Assist students in navigating healthcare systems, insurance processes, and community-based support networks.
  • Monitor student progress and follow through with treatment recommendations and referrals.

Crisis Prevention and Intervention

  • Respond to students experiencing psychological distress or crisis situations.
  • Provide brief interventions, de-escalation, crisis stabilization, and safety planning.
  • Collaborate with campus partners and emergency responders when immediate intervention is necessary.
  • Conduct follow-up and re-entry support for students returning from hospitalization, residential treatment, or other higher levels of care.
  • Participate in campus behavioral intervention processes and threat assessment activities, as appropriate.

Student Support and Consultation

  • Provide short-term individual and group educational sessions within the scope of the position and professional training or licensure.
  • Conduct risk assessments and assist students in identifying appropriate treatment options.
  • Offer consultation to students, faculty, staff, and families regarding available resources and strategies to support students of concern.
  • Advocate for students by helping reduce barriers that impact their educational persistence and success.

Education on Awareness and Prevention

  • Participate in campus-wide initiatives focused on mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and student wellness.
  • Develop and deliver educational presentations, workshops, and training related to recognizing and responding to students in distress.
  • Support Student Health Services wellness activities designed to increase awareness of available resources and promote help-seeking behaviors.
  • Assist in developing collaborative relationships with community agencies and referral partners.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of services provided in accordance with professional, ethical, legal, and institutional standards.
  • Collect and maintain data related to services, referrals, outcomes, and program effectiveness.
  • Prepare reports and other documentation as requested.
  • Adhere to applicable federal and state laws and regulations, including FERPA, HIPAA, mandated reporting requirements, and professional ethical guidelines.

Other Duties

  • Participate in departmental meetings, case consultations, and professional development activities.
  • Serve on campus committees or workgroups related to student support and well-being, as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned consistently with the scope and intent of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree from an accredited institution in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Psychology, or a closely related behavioral health field.
  • Experience providing crisis intervention, risk assessment, case management, behavioral health services, or care coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, and linguistic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Eligibility for clinical licensure in the State of California or possession of a current California license such as:

o Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW),

o Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT),

o Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), or

o Associate registration with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences under appropriate supervision requirements.

  • Experience working in a college, university, or adolescent/young adult behavioral health setting.
  • Knowledge of community mental health systems and local referral resources.
  • Experience participating in Behavioral Intervention Teams (BIT/CARE Teams) or multidisciplinary student support teams.
  • Training in suicide risk assessment and intervention.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.

Supplemental Information

Professional Expert Designation

This position is designated as a Professional Expert assignment intended to provide specialized wellness education and health promotion services under the direction of the Student Health Center. The Wellness Navigator supplements institutional efforts to foster student well-being and academic success and is not intended to replace, duplicate, or perform duties assigned to existing classified positions. The role does not provide psychotherapy, diagnosis, ongoing case management, academic advising, or other services requiring professional licensure or classified assignment.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director of Student Health Services, the Clinical Case Manager provides clinical case management, crisis prevention and intervention, care coordination, and referral services to support students experiencing health, mental health, and psychosocial challenges that may interfere with their academic success. This temporary Professional Expert position serves as part of a holistic student-wellness approach designed to reduce barriers in support of student retention, persistence, and completion by connecting students to appropriate campus and community resources.

The Clinical Case Manager conducts mental health screenings and triage, provides brief interventions and safety planning, facilitates referrals and linkage to campus and community services, and collaborates with campus departments and community providers to support students of concern. This position may participate in multidisciplinary student support teams, including Behavioral Care Team (BCT), and contribute to campus efforts related to crisis prevention, early intervention, and student well-being.

This position supplements existing student support services and does not replace classified positions.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office and campus environment with frequent interaction with students experiencing emotional distress or crisis. Duties may require responding to urgent situations and collaborating with campus and community partners to ensure student safety and well-being.
