Position Description:
Weekend/On-Call Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (APRN)

Mental Health Resource Center (MHRC) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (APRN) to provide weekend, on-call, and holiday coverage for our inpatient psychiatric programs in Jacksonville. This position supports the MHRC North and South Adult Inpatient Programs and the MHRC North Child/Adolescent Inpatient Program.

This position serves patients within psychiatric crisis stabilization units, where most individuals are admitted involuntarily under Florida's Baker Act. Patients typically remain on the unit for 3–5 days, requiring timely assessment, intervention, and treatment planning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and medication management services, including but not limited to:
  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations and establish diagnoses for assigned patients.
  • Develop and implement individualized, problem-oriented treatment plans with measurable goals and objectives.
  • Prescribe medications in accordance with Florida licensure requirements, established protocols, and the MHRC formulary.
  • Provide medication education, including indications, side effects, risks, benefits, and administration instructions.
  • Obtain and document informed consent for prescribed medications and treatment interventions.
  • Monitor patient progress and modify treatment plans as clinically indicated.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions and other approved treatment modalities within scope of practice.
  • Assess and manage patients experiencing psychiatric crises.
  • Evaluate Baker Act admissions and vacate inappropriate Baker Acts when clinically indicated.
  • Collaborate effectively with psychiatrists, nursing staff, therapists, case managers, and other interdisciplinary team members.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and compliant clinical documentation within the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
Qualifications:
Required Education and Licensure
  • Master's Degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • Current Florida APRN license.
  • ANCC Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).
  • Current DEA registration.
Required Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in psychiatric nursing or working with psychiatric patients.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with individuals diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of post-master's clinical experience as an APRN working under physician supervision.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
  • Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and decision-making skills.
  • The ability to work independently and exercise sound clinical judgment in complex situations.
  • The ability to recognize and respond appropriately to psychiatric emergencies, safety concerns, abuse, neglect, and other crisis situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to establish positive working relationships with patients, families, caregivers, community partners, and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record documentation and patient information systems, with the ability to demonstrate competency in MHRC systems within three months of employment.

Founded in Jacksonville in May 1977, Mental Health Resource Center, Inc. (MHRC) is a Florida not-for-profit corporation that provides a wide range of behavioral health and social services to the community.  Included in MHRC’s service array are 24-hour emergency services; inpatient psychiatric services for children, adolescents and adults; and numerous outpatient services, including medication management, case management, counseling, supported housing, psychosocial rehabilitation, two programs for the homeless, a therapeutic family program, state hospital liaison services, forensic services, in-jail services, and nine Florida Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) programs for adults with severe and persistent mental illness located in Clearwater, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Kissimmee, Naples, Rockledge, Tampa, and Winter Haven. 

Since 1989, MHRC’s programs have been fully accredited by The Joint Commission.  Inpatient services are licensed by the State of Florida, Agency for Health Care Administration.  MHRC is a certified agency of United Way of Northeast Florida.      

MHRC accepts and directly bills most insurance plans, including Medicaid, Medicare and most private insurance plans.  Individuals who do not have health insurance and cannot afford our standard rates may be eligible for a reduced fee, depending on their income and number of household members.  Some MHRC programs are funded in part by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) and its managing entities, LSF Health Systems, Central Florida Behavioral Health Network, and Central Florida Cares Health System; the federal government; and the City of Jacksonville.
