ABOUT THIS POSITION:
We are pursuing qualified candidates to fill the Public Health Laboratories Assistant Director position within the Department of Public Health. This position assists in the planning, direction, coordination, and evaluation of Public Health Laboratory technical and administrative operations and services in the Department of Public Health.

Essential Job Functions
What will I do as a Public Health Laboratories Assistant Director?
Assists in planning, organizing, and directing laboratory operations and in the administration and implementation of laboratory objectives, policies, and procedures to ensure effective and efficient services and compliance with established standards, rules, and regulations.
Assists the Public Health Laboratory Director in the development, implementation, and assessment of long-range and short-term goals; conducts studies and analyzes reports and makes recommendations concerning laboratory staffing, organization, budget, and work flow.
Coordinates Public Health Laboratory operations and services with the operations of other local, state, Public Health and personal health programs.
Plans, organizes, directs and evaluates the work of supervisory staffs of major laboratory sections including Bacteriology/Parasitology, Mycobacteriology, Virology, and Immunology and determines operational priorities.
Directs the development and preparation of grant/contract applications and progress reports and monitors and controls related expenditures.
Plans and implements policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local, State and Federal regulations; ensures that laboratory testing meets the State and Federal mandated protocols.
Conducts validation and verification studies of new methodologies and instrumentations, analyzes results and prepares reports and recommendations.
Manage special projects or assignments as directed by the Public Health Laboratory Director, as needed.
Requirements
REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:
Option I: A Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in chemical, physical, biological science, or related field -or-Graduation from an approved medical school. --AND-- Three (3) years of relevant laboratory work experience in a CLIA 88 certified or accredited clinical or public health laboratory, two years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity*
Option II: A Doctoral degree* from an accredited college or university in chemical, physical, biological science, or related field -or-Graduation from an approved medical school.- -AND- One year of experience at the level of the Los Angeles County class of Public Health Microbiology Supervisor II, directing through subordinate supervising microbiologists the technical and administrative activities of several (more than two) public health laboratory units.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This assessment type will evaluate the experience you list on a questionnaire and assign a score based on a standardized scoring system worth 100% of your total score. This part of the assessment is worth 100% of your total score and assesses: Requirements and Desirable Qualification.
Applicants must receive a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment to be added to the Eligible List.
Passing this examination and being added to the Eligible List does not guarantee an offer of employment.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
Applicants who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the list accordingly. We will use this list to fill vacancies in the Department of Public Health as they occur.

If you answered Yes, for EACH DEGREE you have, you must attach a legible copy of the Official Diploma, Official Transcript(s), or Official Letter from the accredited institution (see Employment Information under Accreditation Information), which shows the area of specialization and the date the degree was awarded, with Registrars signature and school seal to your application.

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY: Do you have a Public Health Microbiologists certificate issued by the California State Department of Public Health or have been issued a temporary certificate by the California State Department of Public Health for those applicants who meet the requirements for admission to the next scheduled examination? The required license and/or certificate must be active and unrestricted or your application will not be accepted. Note: Prior to appointment, applicants must be certified as a California Public Health Microbiologist or have been issued a temporary certificate by the California State Department of Public Health for those applicants who meet the requirements for admission to the next scheduled examination.
