Position Overview

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, the Public Safety Aide performs a wide variety of tasks (such as responding to parking and traffic related calls, issuing parking citations, serving correspondence, and preparing related reports and/or documentation) which do not require the authority of a sworn law enforcement officer. Actual work performed will vary according to assignment and position level. This position and it's respective classifications are non-commissioned positions within the Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) Department of Public Safety (DPS) (this position does not have arrest powers and is unarmed). Incumbent will operate a motor vehicle as necessary for assigned tasks. The ideal candidate for this position is someone who has an interest in law enforcement and is seeking future advancement opportunities in public safety with the ENMU DPS after serving in this civilian capacity. Therefore, when eligible, the incumbent must make an effort to progress into a police officer role in the state of New Mexico and transition (through open recruitment) to an uncertified police cadet (Police Officer I - Uncertified) position between nineteen (19) and twenty-one (21) years of age.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists motorists or citizens as directed by supervisor, or responds to calls for service not requiring the assistance of a sworn police officer.
  • Enforces parking regulations and issues parking citations.
  • Assists with delayed offense reports of petty misdemeanor and misdemeanor-level offenses such as simple vandalism, petty larceny, and abandoned vehicles. This includes preparing related offense and incident reports.
  • Assists with traffic accidents such as directing traffic, or provides assistance to investigative officers at crime scenes such as taking measurements, completing tow reports and waiting for wrecker.
  • Collect and preserve physical evidence in the field under direct supervision and as directed.
  • Assists and/or provides services such as funeral escorts, parades, and other community events.
  • Assists or conducts police vehicle transport activities. Picks-up and delivers correspondence or items for officers, or delivers interoffice mail between university facilities or other law enforcement agencies.
  • Completes reports pertaining to daily activities.
  • Maintains current departmental policies, laws, and regulations and knows where to look for information if not known.
  • Maintains strict accountability of all issued department and individual equipment.
  • Gives factual testimony in court, including testifying in court regarding the chain of custody and integrity of evidence.
  • Works special events such as athletic contests, concerts, and events hosted by student affairs.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Must not have been convicted of, plead to, or engaged in deferred adjudication for any felony offense or crime involving moral turpitude.
  • Must successfully complete a rigid background investigation (Alternative sources will be utilized).
  • Must pass rigid drug, physical, medical, and psychological screening.
  • Must currently reside within Roosevelt County, New Mexico, or be willing to relocate to Roosevelt County, New Mexico, within six (6) months of employment (Non-Negotiable).
  • Must be willing to work any shift including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must possess a valid and current driver's license, with the ability to obtain a valid and current driver's license within the state of New Mexico within 30 days of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have knowledge of, or capacity to learn, applicable public safety procedures. This includes comprehension of written material such as policies, rules, regulations, and statutes.
  • Must be able to type with sufficient speed and accurately enough to accomplish the essential functions of the job; operate office equipment including computers, word processing and spreadsheet applications; respond to requests and inquiries; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Operate a computer terminal, radio, or other communication devices in the completion of assignments. Be able to deal tactfully and effectively with other employees, law enforcement officials, and the public.

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Performs work inside and outside. Depending on the weather, the employee may be exposed to temperature extremes or humid conditions.
  • Duties involve a blend of sedentary and physical work. Will operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis and will need to enter into and exit out of vehicle frequently.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials or bloodborne pathogens.
  • May be exposed to intermittent noise factors such as sirens, speakers, and other loud noises.
  • May work alone with or without direction, may work with one or two other people, and at times may work with a large group of people.
  • Job requires good physical and mental condition.
  • Requires oral and aural communication
  • Requires good literacy skills including reading, writing, and accurately conveying information
  • Exertion of up to 50 pounds plus is possible with the ability to bend, lift, and twist with an equivalent level of weight.

  • May utilize the following tools and equipment: Telephone, radio, motor vehicle, calculator, digital camera, copy machine, flashlight, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and other common items associated with public service and public safety employment.

Retirement

Eastern New Mexico University participates with the New Mexico Educational Retirement Board (NMERB), Social Security, and Medicare.

The University also offers supplemental retirement plans. 403b and 457b plans are available through TIAA/CREF, AIG VALIC, Roth 403b and 457b plans are also available through TIAA/CREF.

Paid Time OffDuring the first year of service, full time non-exempt (hourly) employees accrue 7 hours of annual leave and 7 hours of medical leave per month. During the second year of service, full time non-exempt employees accrue 10 hours of annual leave and 10 hours of medical leave per month. During the third and subsequent years of service, full time non-exempt employees accrue 14.66 hours of annual leave and 14 hours of medical leave per month.

Employees must work for the University for three months before they are eligible to use annual leave. Temporary employees do not accrue leave.

Employee Educational Assistance Plan

Eastern New Mexico University offers a tuition waiver for regular employees and retirees. This program waives the tuition for three courses (up to nine credit hours) per semester. Employees spouses or children may be eligible to use the tuition waiver during any semester that it is not being used by the employee.
