The University of California, Irvine Police Department (UCIPD) is a full-service, 24-hour law enforcement agency providing professional policing and public safety services 365 days a year. UCIPD serves a daily population of more than 65,000 people across the University's Irvine campus and UCI Health locations in the City of Orange, Irvine, Fountain Valley, Lakewood, Los Alamitos, and Placentia.

UCIPD provides comprehensive law enforcement services, including patrol, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, community engagement, crime prevention and suppression, emergency management, and general public safety services.

As a designated 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), UCIPD is responsible for receiving and dispatching emergency calls for service within its jurisdiction, ensuring rapid and coordinated responses to police, fire, and medical emergencies.

UCIPD personnel are dedicated to protecting and serving students, staff, faculty, patients, and visitors, while responding to medical emergencies, crimes in progress, general calls for service, and other campus and medical center safety concerns.

UCIPD personnel are entrusted with the immediate responsibility of protecting life and property across the University of California campuses. Officers must exercise sound judgment, integrity, and professionalism in every aspect of their service, reflecting the department's commitment to safety, accountability, and community partnership.

UCIPD's Health Division uses a hybrid model that includes Police Officers, Public Safety Ambassadors, Public Safety Responders, Public Safety Supervisors, Security Supervisors, and other professional staff members who work together to safeguard the lives and property of the University and its patients, visitors, faculty, staff, and students at the various UCI Health sites.

Public Safety Responders are frequently the first point of contact for the public when seeking assistance or requesting services at any UCI location. They provide information, directions, and general assistance; patrol and respond to calls for service at the various UCI properties; respond to emergencies such as disturbances or medical crises; monitor suspicious activity; provide escorts; and assist with the de-escalation of violent situations.

In the Health setting, they are a direct patient-facing position often found in the emergency department and various clinical settings. They provide patient, visitor, and staff escorts and serve as a security and safety presence within healthcare facilities. Public Safety Responders assist in placing persons in restraints, write reports, and monitor patients as needed. They also staff and monitor security systems, including cameras, monitors and alarms.

Responsibilities:

As a member of the UC Irvine Police Department, the Public Safety Responder assists in monitoring, observing, and reporting public safety concerns and conditions. Qualifications:

Required:

• The ability to read, write, and speak proper English.
• Knowledge of and ability to display/use exceptional customer service and communication skills.
• Must be able to conduct sustained foot patrols and/or extended stationary (standing/sitting) post assignments.
• Ability to effectively operate video surveillance equipment once trained.
• Successfully complete the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety basic certification within the initial six months of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.
• High school diploma, passed GED or other high school equivalency test.
• Valid California Driver's License
• Valid California BSIS Security Guard License
• A minimum of 1 year of experienceAs a California-licensed Security Guard. Licensed in California by BSIS as a Security Guard
• A minimum of 1 year of experienceOf service-related experience,Prior experience working in a position that requires interaction with the public and providing services

Driver's License:

• Required to hold a valid drivers license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Preferred:

• One year of experience working with the public in a customer service environment.
• One year of experience working as a licensed (BSIS) security guard.
• Ability to work variable shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
• Experience working in a University environment.
• Hospital security experience.
• Associate Degree from an accredited institution
• Completion of PC 832 Arrest and Firearms training

Special Conditions:

• As a condition of employment, must successfully complete an extensive background investigation, including Livescan fingerprinting, and a medical examination.
• No Felony convictions.
• Successfully complete the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety basic certification within the initial six months of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.
• Must be able to work shift work, including day and night shifts, weekends, and holidays.
• Must complete the UC Irvine Police Department Public Safety Field Training program.
• Must be able to learn Orange County Communications radio codes and operate a two-way radio.
• Must possess the ability to operate a vehicle, radio, taser, handcuffs, first aid equipment and other related equipment as assigned.
• Must be able to wear and operate in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Must complete and pass a background investigation, Livescan, and medical examination.
