R&D Lab Tech - Graphite Compaction

Position Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Temporary R&D Lab Technician to support a research program in Sunnyvale, CA. The technician will produce graphite samples at high throughput by executing defined procedures using hydraulic presses and steel die sets. Responsibilities also include characterizing samples, preparing them for high-temperature testing, maintaining laboratory equipment, and contributing to the improvement of lab tools and workflows.

This is an execution-focused role requiring strong mechanical aptitude, careful adherence to procedures, attention to detail, and comfort performing repetitive hands-on work in a laboratory or manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Graphite Sample Production — Approximately 70%
  • Become proficient in operating and maintaining 25-ton and 200-ton hydraulic presses and their associated die sets.
  • Learn to operate the 500-ton press once it is commissioned.
  • Follow established standard operating procedures to:
    • Fill steel dies with graphite powder.
    • Assemble dies, punches, and related tooling.
    • Position die assemblies in hydraulic presses.
    • Compact graphite powder according to specified pressure and process parameters.
    • Reconfigure dies for part ejection.
    • Eject completed samples without damaging them.
    • Clean, inspect, and reset tooling for the next cycle.
  • Produce consistent samples at sufficient volume to support statistically meaningful testing.
  • Accurately label, track, and document samples and relevant process conditions.
  • Identify and report equipment, tooling, quality, or safety issues.
• Sample Characterization and Testing — Approximately 20%
  • Perform sample measurements and characterization according to established procedures.
  • Operate electrical and thermal conductivity measurement equipment after training.
  • Prepare and transport samples between operating facilities in San Jose.
  • Support the placement of samples into graphitization furnace runs.
  • Prepare samples for shipment to third-party testing laboratories.
  • Record and communicate test results accurately and promptly.
• Laboratory and Equipment Improvements — Approximately 10%
  • Assist with practical improvement projects that enhance sample pressing, handling, testing, or analysis safety.
