    Page | 1 of 3 BEAUMONT INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Job Description JOB TITLE: RDSPD Certified Sign Language Interpreter CLASSIFICATION: Nonexempt REPORTS TO: Director of RDSPD PAY GRADE: 8 187 days LOCATION: Campus Varies DATE REVISED: 6/15/2026 FUNDED BY: 446.11.6129.00.838.23.000 PRIMARY PURPOSE: Provide professional sign language interpreting and communication access services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students in Pre-K through Grade 12 educational settings. As an integral member of the educational team, the interpreter facilitates effective communication among students, teachers, administrators, related service providers, and families to support academic achievement, social development, and full participation in the school environment. The Educational Sign Language Interpreter works collaboratively to implement student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with federal, state, and district regulations. QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certification: High School Diploma or GED required. Associate Degree or a minimum of 60 college credit hours required. Degree in Interpreting, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or related field preferred. Valid Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) Certification or Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification required. Out-of-state certification may be accepted with the requirement to obtain Texas certification within a specified timeframe. Must maintain certification and continuing education requirements established by the governing certification body. Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of the interpreter role and the Code of Ethics Must be able to interpret/transliterate expressively and receptively Ability to interpret in or willingness to learn Signing Exact English (SEE) sign system Ability to work well with deaf and hard-of-hearing children Knowledge of Deaf culture General knowledge of language development and child development Strong people skills and team player Page | 2 of 3 Experience: Minimum one year of interpreting experience preferred. Experience working with children and/or students with disabilities preferred. Experience in educational interpreting is preferred. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

    1. Provide communication access in: a. General education classrooms b. Deaf education classrooms c. Resource settings d. Tutorials e. Extracurricular activities f. School programs g. Field trips h. Parent conferences i. ARD/IEP meetings j. School-sponsored events
    2. Provide sight translation of instructional materials, assignments, assessments, and school communications as appropriate.
    3. Assists classmates and deaf/hard of hearing student(s) to understand the role of the interpreter and the social and communication needs of the deaf/hard of hearing student, and also supports the teacher in developing a level of comfort with the interaction styles and needs of the DHH students.
    4. Become and remain well-versed in the deaf education classroom or general education classroom course materials to demonstrate competency in the interpreting or transliterating process.
    5. Assist with in-class support in either the self-contained deaf education setting or the general education setting (i.e. small group instruction, individual tutoring, or clarification of information presented by the teacher). Take class notes to facilitate instruction for the student(s)
    6. Demonstrate flexibility when role shifts take place (i.e. in-class support vs. interpreting in a self-contained deaf education setting or in the general education setting).
    7. Be informed, monitor, and report to the deaf education case manager when concerns arise about the student's attention, comprehension, general academic progress, and accommodations/modifications outlined in the IEP.
    8. Work collaboratively with co-workers and supervisors to ensure that the goals of the school/program are met.
    9. Demonstrate professionalism in all ethical areas, especially in applying the Interpreter Code of Ethics to the educational setting, as well as in all communication.
    10. Assist the deaf education teacher(s) with: a. Evaluation and reporting of student performance and progress b. Individual and/or group instruction activities c. General supervision of students in all settings d. Clerical duties, hearing aid checks, FM system checks, etc e. Any other classroom-related activities
    11. Cooperate with other staff members in students' movement from one activity to another.
    12. Serve as a role model for students in: a. Personal appearance and dress b. Usage of appropriate speech, signing vocabulary, and other means of communication c. Personal behavior at all times.
    13. Accept personal responsibility for caring for school facilities, supplies, and equipment. Encourage students to do the same. Page | 3 of 3
    14. Develop and maintain proper attitudes, good work habits, and respect for the rights and properties of others. Encourage students to do the same.
    15. Operate by district regulations and within the framework of any specific guidelines of the buildings to which assigned.
    16. Assist with and participate in all school activities (district, and/or individual school), cooperate with teacher(s) assigned, and assist in providing general supervision of DHH students in all settings.
    17. Participate in continuing professional development as required by the certification governing body.
    18. Work with any identified RDSPD student in any assignment.
    19. Participate in appropriate district and school in-service activities.
    20. Perform other duties as assigned. Work effectively with students, staff, and families. After-work hours for overtime Physical Demands Repetitive hand, wrist, and arm movements associated with signing. Frequent standing and walking. Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and climbing stairs. Visual concentration and sustained attention. Environmental Demands Work indoors and outdoors. Exposure to typical school environments. Exposure to childhood communicable diseases; good general health and stamina needed. Occasional travel between campuses or district locations. Occasional after-hours events and meetings.
