Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Bed Management Coordinator (BMC) coordinates the assignment of patient care beds within the hospital. The BMC collaborates with the facility departments, medical staff and leadership to promote appropriate, timely patient placement in beds and positions so that patient care is not delayed. The BMC facilitates regularly scheduled bed management meetings with facility staff to identify and communicate bed utilization issues.

  

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Facilitates patient throughput with an on-going focus on quality and efficiency

 

Screens admissions, using defined admission criteria, for appropriateness of level of care orders and bed assignments

 

Navigates or resolves bed assignment conflicts; escalates as needed to the appropriate resources

 

Prioritizes bed requests, coordinates bed reservations, and promptly assigns bed reservation holds for all admissions and transfers in the hospital

 

Through effective and professional communication, acts as a liaison between and with physicians, patient / family, hospital staff and patient care areas, and outside agencies to promote efficient, appropriate patient flow

 

Facilitates bed management meeting in the absence of the Director, Bed Management efficiently and effectively communicates resources and issues to appropriate areas of the facility

 

Assists Director, Bed Management in tracking and trending barriers to patient flow; makes recommendations and assists with the development of action plans to improve processes and systems

 

Adheres to established corporate and facility policy and procedure and standards of care; escalates issues to the Director, Bed Management in a timely manner

 

Maintains current and accurate information in MEDITECH (and/or other) system

 

Applies understanding of EMTALA regulations to decisions regarding ER and inter-facility transfer patients.

 

Performs all other duties as assigned. 

What qualifications you will need:

RN with broad-based clinical knowledge and understanding of facility Plan of Care unit-based admission, discharge, and exclusion criteria

 Minimum 2 years experience in leadership responsibilities – can include charge nurse experience

3-7 years related experience

Current New Hampshire state RN licensure, or valid compact state licensure

 

Effective conflict resolution skills

 

Effective strategic, logistical and critical thinking with pro-active decision making and negotiation skills

 

Ability to facilitate daily Bed Huddles and develop action plans to mitigate discharge barriers

 

Ability to establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships

 

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats

 

Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously

 

Able to have crucial conversations in a confident manner

 

Able to work independently with minimal supervision and able to work effectively within teams
