Job Summary

This is a high-acuity, high-volume Emergency Room position with approximately 230 visits per day, 36 beds with overflow units, and a 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio. The unit manages all ages primarily Geriatric and Adult patients, with approximately 10% pediatric patients who are transported to CHOC. The case load includes respiratory, stroke, abdominal pain, cardiac, and sepsis presentations. This facility is a Stroke and STEMI Center and holds Magnet Designation. The traveler will be expected to float to Tele Hold and ICU Hold units as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide emergency nursing care in a high-acuity, high-volume ER environment (~230 visits/day, 36 beds with overflow units)
• Maintain a 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio across a diverse patient population including Geriatric, Adult, and pediatric patients
• Manage case load including respiratory, stroke, abdominal pain, cardiac, and sepsis presentations
• Transport or coordinate transport of pediatric patients (~10% of caseload) to CHOC as needed
• Float to Tele Hold and ICU Hold units as needed
• Document and chart using Meditech

Required Skills

• Stroke experience required hard stop; do not screen candidates without this experience
• Minimum 1.5 years of experience in the Emergency Room specialty (hard stop); 2 years preferred redirect anything less than 1.5 years
• Must be open to working weekends will likely exceed every other weekend to meet unit need; must be available to work at least 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule cycle, which may include a shift every weekend
• Willingness to float between like units (Tele Hold and ICU Hold as needed)
• Scheduling preferences can be considered but are not guaranteed; scheduling requests due to additional employment will not be considered
• Holiday RTO cannot be guaranteed and must be signed pending
• Epic experience highly preferred; call out if no Epic experience
• Limited pediatric experience acceptable
• First-time travelers not accepted (unless strong experience screen if so)
• Pending license not accepted
• RTO must be included at time of submission

Preferred Skills

• Epic EMR experience (highly preferred)
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) certification
• CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) or CPN (Certified Pediatric Nurse) certification

Education Requirements

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) Required
• BLS (Basic Life Support) Required
• NIHSS (NIH Stroke Scale) Required
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) Required
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) Preferred
• CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) or CPN (Certified Pediatric Nurse) Preferred
• RN License Required

Required Experience

• Minimum 1.5 years of experience in the Emergency Room specialty (hard stop); 2 years preferred
• Stroke experience required hard stop

• Night Shift: 3x12 Hours, 19:00 7:30
• Must be available to work weekends, potentially every weekend to meet unit need (at least 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule cycle)
• Holiday RTO cannot be guaranteed
• Facility is able to call off once per two-week pay period (Guaranteed Hours policy)
• On-call not required
• Charting System: Meditech
