  • Position Type: Contract

  • Pay Rate: $55.00 / Hour (USD)
  • Shift / Schedule: Night shift, 4x12 hours (18:45 07:15)

Job Summary

This is a travel/contract Registered Nurse position on a combination acuity unit serving adult medical-surgical and surgical stepdown patients. The unit carries a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6 for floor surgical/medicine inpatient patients. Contracts of 13 26 weeks are accepted, and shifts of 36 or 48 hours per week are accepted (if 48 hours, no overtime is billed until after 48 hours). The facility is a healthcare organization located in Wilmington, NC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care to a wide range of patients who have had or plan to have surgery, or who are involved in trauma situations
  • Interpret and manage dysrhythmias
  • Utilize Rapid Response Teams as appropriate
  • Administer blood products
  • Perform central line care and management
  • Perform peripheral line care and management
  • Manage surgical drains
  • Administer oxygen via nasal cannula
  • Perform non-invasive airway management
  • Implement and maintain isolation precautions
  • Perform wound care and wound vac management
  • Work every other weekend as required
  • Float to like units when needed
  • Operate unit systems including Pyxis, EPIC, and SBAR for medication, documentation, and communication
  • Operate specialty equipment including wound vacs, chest tubes, NG tube/Corpak, JP drains, Hemovac drains, and Penrose drains
  • Be assigned to and expected to work a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team; may be required to report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster
  • Be aware that consolidation to the Centralized Office mid-contract may occur and contract staff may be preassigned to units as needed

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Night shift, 12-hour shifts (18:45 07:15)
  • Every other weekend required

  • Patient diagnoses include a wide range of surgical and trauma presentations: Cellulitis, Appendicitis, Cholecystitis, Diverticulitis, Motor Vehicle Accidents, Gun Shots, Stabbings, Falls, Various Cancers, Kidney Stones, Bowel Obstruction, Peripheral Vascular Disease, Limb Ischemia, Hernia, Gangrene
  • Special procedures include a wide range of inpatient surgical and trauma procedures: Cholecystectomy, Appendectomy, Hernia Repair, TURP, Ostomy Creation or Closure, Wound Debridement, Tumor Removal, Kidney Stone Removal, Amputations, Fem Pop Bypass
  • Special equipment in use: Wound Vacs, Chest Tubes, NG tube/Corpak, JP Drains, Hemovac Drains, Penrose Drains
  • Unit systems (Medication, Documentation, Communication): Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR
  • Scheduling type: as needed
  • Scrubs: All Navy or Navy on bottom/White Top
  • Flu vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions only)
  • COVID-19 vaccination: Not required
  • Contract staff will be assigned to and expected to work a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team; may be required to report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster; consolidation to the Centralized Office mid-contract may occur

Important Notes

  • RTO (Return to Origin) after booking is not allowed and is not allowed to be worked out onsite. Any call offs or additional RTO on unit could possibly result in a contract cancellation and DNR (Do Not Rehire).
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start for this specialty.
  • Unit orientation: 2 days of hospital orientation 24 hours of floor training
  • RTO maximum: 7 days for AYA Auto Offer
