JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY:
· Utilizes the nursing process to provide comprehensive nursing care during the peri-operative phases.
· Coordinates total patient care and patient safety with other health team members, particularly the Clinical and Patient Care Surgical Coordinator (PCSC) teams.
· Demonstrates professional growth and development by accepting responsibility and accountability for one’s nursing practice.
· Serve as a liaison as part of the New Vista Surgical Suites (“NVSS”) Team at The Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery (“BCAPS”).
· Provides a patient centered and forward thinking, professional, welcoming, efficient, and exceptional patient experience.
· Provides comprehensive nursing care during the pre-op and post-op phases.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
· The position requires an Associate Degree in Nursing; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
· An active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan is required.
· Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
· Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.
· Previous experience working in a Plastic Surgery Office or Med Spa is preferred.
· Previous experience working as a registered nurse in a similar environment or capacity and understanding of the tasks and requirements of the position.
· This position requires the ability to organize and prioritize work, complete responsibilities within required timeframes, work independently, and collaborate effectively with others.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Assessment
· Competency to assess the physiological health status of the patient pre-operatively.
· Verify the operative procedure prior to procedure using consent forms, patient statements, and surgeon verification.
· Reports deviation of diagnostic studies such as lab or radiology reports.
· Check pre-operative vital signs upon admission to surgery: blood pressure, pulse, respirations, pulse oximetry, pain, and temperature.
· Documents nutritional status such as patient has been NPO and verifies allergies to medication, food, or chemicals.
· Assess the patient’s post-surgery conditions and have knowledge of surgery specific post-operative care.
· Monitors patient’s vital signs, pain, incision site, and airway status.
· Makes clinical judgments when it comes to pain, vomiting, and airway issues.
· Assess a patient’s readiness for discharge.
· Communicates and documents any issues to surgeon, anesthesia provider, and appropriate members of the health care team in verbal or written reports, including data which might be relevant to discharge planning.
· Formulate nursing diagnosis based on health status data.
Planning
· Competency to establish realistic and attainable goals based on nursing diagnosis and to develop a plan of care based on nursing actions to achieve patient goals.
· Provide positioning aids during the intraoperative phase to prevent skin breakdown or impairment of the nervous or vascular system.
· Coordinate use of supplies and equipment for intraoperative care.
· Organize nursing activities in logical sequence by prioritizing nursing actions.
· Coordinate patient care needs with other members of the surgical and health care team.
· Assign activities to appropriate personnel based on their qualifications and patient needs.
· Maintain required certifications (BLS/ACLS) and licenses (RN) to perform effectively in an emergent situation.
Implementation
· Competency to implement nursing actions in transferring the patient according to the care plan.
· Confirm the patient’s identity using bracelet and patient’s statement.
· Determine appropriate and safe transport; Select appropriate personnel for transport as determined by patient acuity and number of staff needed.
· Provide for emotional needs during transport.
· Communicate and document method of transport.
· Competency to participate in patient/family teaching.
· Participate in pre-operative teaching as needed, such as explanation of surgical routine, instructions, and environment. This includes pre-operative phone calls as assigned.
· Communicate and document patient/family teaching.
· Competency to create and maintain a sterile field while opening sterile items for procedure, including pouring solutions.
· Use principles of aseptic technique in varying situations, such as infection control practices, skin preps, and demonstrate knowledge of clean vs. sterile.
· Initiate corrective action when breaks in technique occur.
· Inspect sterile items for integrity of package, sterile indicator, and/or outdate prior to delivery to the field.
· Adhere to dress code policy for peri-operative area(s).
· Communicate and document maintenance of/compromise of sterile field.
· Competency to provide equipment and supplies based on patient needs.
· Anticipate needed equipment and supplies, utilizing the surgeon preference card.
· Select equipment and supplies in an organized, timely, and cost-effective manner throughout the peri-operative phase.
· Ensure all equipment is functioning before use and follow guidelines to operate the equipment.
· Operate mechanical, electrical, and powered equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions and NVSS’s policies.
· Remove malfunctioning equipment from service, tag it appropriately, and initiate repair, while notifying the Materials Management team.
· Use supplies and instruments judiciously and in a cost-effective manner.
· Communicate and document provision of equipment and supplies including charges.
· Competency to perform sponge, sharps, and instrument counts following all policies and procedures.
· Initiate corrective action when a count is incorrect.
· Communicate and document results of counts according to policy.
· Communicate and document administration drugs, medications and solutions as prescribed, according to policy, including medication errors.
· Assist/monitor physical symptoms, behavioral changes, intake and output, and vital signs.
· Initiate nursing actions or obtain physician order as appropriate, based on interpretation of physiological data/changes.
· Competency to monitor and control the environment.
· Control the environment to provide ultimate patient care, such as temperature of room, sensory stimuli, traffic, and noise level.
· Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
· Maintain appropriate traffic patterns in the peri-operative environment.
· Adhere to sanitation policies for infection control including confining and containing waste for appropriate disposal.
· Competency to respect patient’s rights.
· Demonstrate awareness and practice according to the Patient’s Bill of Rights and BCAPS’s policy.
· Provide patient safety and maintain patient confidentiality.
· Communicate and document provision for patient rights as appropriate.

· Participate in the Quality Improvement Program activities including identification of aspects of care, collection and analysis of data, formulation of recommendations, implementation of an improvement plan, and evaluation of the process.
Additional Responsibilities
· In keeping with the teamwork philosophy, act as a resource person to other staff.
· Adhere to OSHA guidelines for Universal Precautions for exposure to blood and body fluids, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Follows AORN Recommended Practices and NVSS policies at all times.
· Participate in the orientation of new employees.
· Attends BCAPS/NVSS staff and unit meetings, and educational opportunities.
· Demonstrates flexibility in meeting the operational needs of BCAPS.
· Follows AORN/ASPAN Recommended Practices and BCAPS policy at all times.
· Assist patients, visitors, staff, and physicians through professional, clear, and effective communication.
· Ensure all work is compliant with all NVSS, HIPAA, and other applicable laws/policies/guidelines.
· Communicate professionally and respectfully with third-party partners, vendors, patients, physician offices, and others when representing NVSS.
· Prioritize job responsibilities to facilitate optimum patient care and utilization of resources.
· Demonstrate flexibility in meeting the needs of NVSS and the clinical units, including cross-training for all nursing functions and being flexible with shift times.
· Maintain all required healthcare certifications.
· Maintains compliance with QUAD A standards and requirements to ensure the safety of the patient and uphold our accreditation.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position involves the physical and environmental demands described below, which are associated with providing peri-operative nursing care. Essential functions may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
· INTERNAL – The building is a clean, climate-controlled, well-lighted office. This position has exposure to potentially hazardous work situations. Normal peri-operative environment with occasional exposure to chemicals and their odors, cleaning solvents, bodily fluids, and other hazardous materials. Occasional exposure to possible injury when working with machines and equipment, which requires care and following proper safety procedures. The noise level is moderate and includes sounds of office and hospital equipment.
· EXTERNAL – There is no travel associated with this position.
· GENERAL – The essential functions of this position include communicating with patients and the health care team, moving through the peri-operative environment, handling instrumentation, and distinguishing supplies and instrumentation. The role may involve intermittent lifting, moving, carrying, and pushing of light- to medium-weight objects. These functions may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation. Work requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to handle instrumentation, hearing to understand verbal instructions, and near vision to distinguish supplies and instrumentation.
· OTHER– Based on the OSHA guidelines for protection against occupational exposure to hepatitis and HIV, this position is described as Category I. This means that this position has exposure to blood and body fluids. Policies are in place for Universal Precautions identifying exposure risks and appropriate barrier protection.
