Position SummaryThe IV Therapy RN provides skilled nursing care to patients receiving intravenous infusions in the IV therapy clinic, including vascular access, infusion administration, patient monitoring, and education, under established clinical protocols and provider-directed plans of care. The RN works closely with physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and the interdisciplinary care team to ensure safe, effective infusion therapy.A national IV therapy/vascular access certification (e.g., CRNI, VA-BC) is not required but is ideal. RNs without certification who have a strong desire to specialize in IV therapy are encouraged to apply; the organization offers precepted clinical hours to help build IV therapy competency toward certification.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesVascular Access & Infusion AdministrationPerform patient assessments prior to infusion, including review of orders, allergies, lab values, and vascular access needs.Insert and manage peripheral IVs; assess, access, and maintain PICC lines, midlines, ports, and other vascular access devices per protocol and RN scope.Prepare and administer ordered IV fluids, medications, antibiotics, biologics, and other infusions using proper aseptic technique.Monitor patients during and after infusion for adverse reactions, infiltration, extravasation, or other complications; intervene and notify the provider promptly.Discontinue infusions and access devices per order and protocol.Clinical Support & Care CoordinationPrepare treatment areas, supplies, and equipment for infusion visits; verify orders and obtain vital signs and relevant history.Facilitate provider orders for labs, imaging, cultures, and specialist referrals; follow up on results and route significant findings.Communicate and coordinate care with physicians, NPs, pharmacies, home infusion providers, and other care partners.Documentation & ComplianceComplete accurate, timely documentation of infusion orders, vascular access, medications administered, patient response, and education provided at each encounter.Maintain records in compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, state Board of Nursing requirements, and CMS and other payer documentation/coverage requirements.Participate in infusion outcome monitoring, quality initiatives, clinical audits, and ongoing IV therapy education.Patient & Caregiver EducationEducate patients/caregivers on the infusion plan, vascular access care, and signs/symptoms of complications requiring medical attention.Assess understanding of home care instructions and reinforce treatment adherence and follow-up.Infection Prevention & SafetyFollow standard precautions, aseptic technique, and infection prevention protocols for vascular access and infusion procedures.Monitor for signs of infection, systemic reaction, or deterioration and escalate immediately; follow sharps/biohazard/exposure procedures.Certification: Ideal, Not RequiredA current, active national IV therapy or vascular access certification (e.g., CRNI via INCC, or VA-BC via VACC) is ideal but not required to be considered for this role.For RNs who join without certification but have a strong desire to specialize in IV therapy, the organization offers precepted clinical hours with an experienced infusion nurse or provider to help build the hands-on competency and experience relevant to national IV therapy certification eligibility.Minimum QualificationsCurrent, unrestricted RN license in the state of practice; graduate of an accredited nursing program; current BLS certification.Ability to maintain required facility credentials and professional requirements.Preferred QualificationsCurrent national IV therapy/vascular access certification (or strong desire to specialize in IV therapy and build toward certification through precepted hours); previous IV therapy or infusion clinic experience.Experience with peripheral IV insertion, PICC/midline/port access, and infusion pumpsKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesStrong nursing assessment and vascular access skills; knowledge of infusion therapy, medication administration, and infection prevention principles; excellent patient/caregiver education and communication skills; effective interdisciplinary coordination; strong organization and time management. Candidates interested in building toward certification should bring motivation and self-direction to complete precepted hours.Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Scope of PracticeMay require prolonged standing/walking, bending, positioning patients for vascular access, and lifting or moving equipment/supplies (with or without reasonable accommodation), primarily within the IV therapy clinic setting. The RN does not independently diagnose, prescribe, or establish a medical treatment plan; all services are performed per the state Nurse Practice Act, organizational policy, provider orders, and applicable facility/payer requirements.
