JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Sleep Disorders Center Medical Director and Respiratory Care Services Department Director, the RPSGT or eligible is responsible for providing polysomnographic tests in accordance with specific physician's orders, department policies and procedures.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintains knowledge of the various methods of sleep testing, including the necessary equipment. Remains alert, assesses patients for sleep disorders.
- Administers sleep testing and titration treatment, understands the purpose of each and the possible side effects associated with each.
- Sets-up and monitors sleep testing and the associated patient education required for such treatment, such as CPAP and or BILEVEL management.
- Performs EEG testing and understands the possible complications and contraindications as associated with the procedure.
- Documents all pertinent data in the EMR following completion of any service.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of all departmental forms, flow charts, logbooks and their proper usage.
- Performs all additional duties as assigned by the department director or coordinator.
- Prepares patient charts and sends reports to ordering physicians plus physicians on the case. Records and files reports in the department according to department procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the differences in techniques and treatment modalities as performed on patients of varying ages, including pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Inspects and tests sleep equipment to ensure that it is functioning safely and efficiently.
- Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs of a patient and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Patient's family is included in teaching as appropriate.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients' needs are met and that hospital policy is followed.
- Ability to assess patient, his/her need, and ability to tolerate treatment and reassessment for response to treatment.
Requirements Include
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
- Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) or Sleep Disorders Specialty (RRT-SDS) credentials from NBRC, required
- Graduate of an AMA-approved School of Respiratory Therapy, preferred
- NBRC certified Respiratory Technician or NBRC Registered Therapist licensed by the Ohio Respiratory Care Board, preferred Current State of Ohio Respiratory Therapist Licensure, preferred
- Three or more years of previous experience in all aspects of cardiopulmonary services, preferred
- Additional training in Polysomnographic technology or registered in sleep medicine
- Current BLS CPR Certification, required
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Thoroughly familiar with the operation of a polysomnography and the 10/20 system. Capable of summarizing respiratory, cardiac and movement abnormalities that may occur during the recording (scoring). Having the ability to recognize pathology and differentiates artifact from real physiological data is particularly important. Must be able to conduct daytime procedures such as MSLT and MWT testing that are crucial in the evaluation of excessive somnolence. Monitor insurance pre-certification on sleep patients and work with the appropriate department. Promote the sleep and EEG Clinic by making public appearance with all types of sleep disorder education.
