Job Description

Hilo Benioff Medical Center, part of the East Hawaii Region of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, is seeking a compassionate and skilled Registered Professional Nurse III to join our Hale Ho‘ola Behavioral Health Unit. This unit provides crisis stabilization and treatment for adults experiencing severe mental illness and co-occurring conditions. In this role, you will deliver patient-centered psychiatric nursing care while collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to support recovery and promote safe, therapeutic outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care by assessing patients’ physical and psychosocial conditions, developing care plans, and administering medications and treatments.
  • Conduct initial and ongoing behavioral health assessments, documenting patient progress and response to treatment.
  • Support crisis intervention efforts, including recognizing and responding to psychiatric emergencies and implementing appropriate safety measures.
  • Collaborate with physicians, social services, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care and ensure appropriate treatment and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and families on mental health conditions, medications, and available community resources to support recovery.
  • Serve as Charge Nurse as assigned, assisting with staff coordination, delegation, and maintaining a safe and therapeutic care environment.
     

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Experience: Minimum of six (6) months of professional nursing experience providing direct patient care in a clinical setting.
  • Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certifications required within one (1) month of hire.
  • Licensure: Current, valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Hawaii.

  • Strong assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in both mental health and medical care.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and care teams.

* Rates listed for paid holidays, vacation and sick days are for 1.0 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) positions assigned to 8 hour shifts. Accruals for these benefits are otherwise prorated based on FTE.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen.  The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.

Shift Details
