The City of Topeka is seeking a community-minded individual with experience in the construction trade to join its Housing Services division. This position provides support for programs that help homeowners and tenants remain in their homes and plays a role in the efforts to build and restore the community.
This incumbent manages rehabilitation projects and works closely with contractors and property owners through the construction process. Primary responsibilities include performing inspections of residential structures, preparing estimates, and writing specifications. Position hours are Monday Friday, 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
What youll do:
Perform residential housing inspections to determine deficiencies and needed repairs to being into compliance with applicable local, state and federal codes and regulations.
Draft construction specifications and cost estimates.
Manage rehabilitation projects through the full construction process.
The ideal candidate:
Has outstanding customer service and communication skills.
Basic construction knowledge.
Is skilled at prioritizing and multi-tasking.
Has the ability to analyze problems and exercise good judgment.
Minium qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
Must have and maintain a valid drivers license and city insurable driving record.
Minimum three (3) years experience in the housing construction or remodeling field, with a demonstrated knowledge of the construction trades.
Experience with Microsoft windows software such as Word and Excel are desired.
Familiarity with a specification writing/estimating system desired, such as but not limited to Housing Developer Pro.
Must be able to pass the required tests and become State licensed as an Asbestos Inspector, a Lead-Paint Risk Assessor and a certified H.Q.S. Inspector within six months of hire.

Entry Rate of Pay: $25.23 - $26.40 per hour, depending on qualifications
