Department: Earth & Atmospheric Sciences Salary: Commensurate with experience

    Description:

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Houston is seeking a non-tenure track Research Assistant Professor in Isotope Geochemistry. Duties include managing and supporting research operations in two mass spectrometry laboratories: the MC-ICP-MS Lab (NuPlasma 2, Q-ICP-MS, Laser-ablation system) and the TIMS Lab (Triton Plus, Triton XT). Both instrument labs have dedicated clean chemistry labs for sample preparation. The role will be a mix of laboratory management and independent research, with an estimated 70% of the responsibilities focused on lab operations and 30% dedicated to pursuing the candidate's own research projects.

Candidates should have significant experience in mass spectrometry, specifically with TIMS and/or MC-ICP-MS instruments and should also be skilled in the operation and upkeep of clean lab facilities. The successful candidate will ensure that all lab users are properly trained, ensure that all lab safety protocols are followed, and oversee wet chemical processing of geological materials. The successful candidate will also be motivated to assist students and post-doctoral researchers while developing their own independent research in fields such as petrology, Earth-system evolution, volcanology, or planetary science/cosmochemistry.

This is a full-time position based on a 9-month academic year schedule, summer salary support may be available during the first two years contingent on funding and reappointment. After this initial period, and pending reappointment, the candidate will be expected to lead and contribute to grant writing efforts in order to secure continued summer salary funding. The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences offers a vibrant research environment with cutting-edge analytical facilities, including TIMS, LA-ICP-MS, MC-ICP-MS, IRMS, QQQ-ICPMS, and ICP-OES labs, as well as sample preparation facilities.

Applicants must have a Doctorate degree in Earth and planetary sciences or related fields.

To apply, please submit a cover letter (maximum 2 pages) outlining your research interests and relevant experience, a full academic CV, transcripts of your academic degrees, and contact information for 3 references. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.

Employees are expected to have a home address in the state of Texas for the duration of their appointments.

Official transcripts are required for a faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidates.

All positions at the University of Houston-System are security sensitive and will require a criminal history check. Individuals conducting research in critical infrastructure areas (i.e., communication infrastructure systems, cybersecurity systems, electric grid, hazardous waste treatment systems, and/or water treatment facilities) are subject to regular review to ensure the security and integrity of the research is maintained.

The University of Houston System and its universities are Equal Opportunity Institutions. Everyone is encouraged to apply.
