EDUCATION PROGRAM INTERN

PART TIME (UP TO 28 HOURS/WEEK)

SALARY: $17.00 - $20.00 / HOURLY

DEFINITION

The Resident Internship Program has been developed to provide Oakland Housing Authority program participants with part-time work experience for up to 9 months within the Department of Family and Community Partnerships (FCP). This on-the-job training will give participants a thorough understanding of community program development practices and general office functions in preparation for entry into the competitive workforce. Resident Interns will assist FCP program staff in implementing residential education programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Under FCP Education Program Coordinator supervision, the resident intern provides general program support; outreach program information and greets program participants in a friendly and welcoming manner; assists in planning and implementing programs and events; sets up and breaks down spaces for events; organizes files and performs data entry; seeks out and maintains relationships with community agencies; regularly contributes to staff meetings with ideas and insights.

Education Program Support

  • Assists with the day to day operations and events in the education program; and
  • Provides college preparation information and resources to OHA residents; and
  • Assists OHA residents with applying to educational institutions and/or developing plans to obtain GED, High School Diploma or College Degree; and
  • Assists OHA residents with accessing educational resources to support learning needs (i.e. tutoring, disabled student resources etc.) ; and
  • Co-facilitates workshops to assist OHA residents with accessing financial aid resources; and
  • Maintains regular communication with Education Program Coordinator and other agency staff.

Internship Objectives

  • Gain an overall understanding of OHA residents' needs and become familiar with community resources; and
  • Develop competencies in program development and implementation; and
  • Learn database software and track program benchmarks; and
  • Learn marketing and networking strategies; and

Personal Development

  • Develop planning, organizational and time management skills; and
  • Increase knowledge of computer skills and technology; and
  • Develop team-based work competencies and professional ethics; and
  • Increase overall knowledge of community resources; and
  • Learn effective referral procedures.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

Work evenings, weekends and other work-related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

High School Diploma/GED or must be able to provide verification of enrollment in GED classes upon commencement of internship

Must be a resident of the Oakland Housing Authority; on the lease and in good standing

Some applicable work experience and/or training preferred. College experience is a plus

Ability to pass a background screening and a drug test

Strong desire for a career in community supportive services

Bilingual skills in ASL, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and/or Spanish are a plus.

Equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
