Wayfair is looking for a Retail Experience Designer to help define how our brand comes to life in physical stores.
This is an exciting moment to join Wayfair as we rapidly expand our physical retail presence and continue to define what the Wayfair brand looks and feels like in the real world. As our store footprint grows, this role will have a unique opportunity to help shape the creative foundation for our physical spaces, developing ideas and design principles that can both make individual stores special and scale across a growing portfolio.
Sitting at the intersection of brand creative and store design, this role will translate Wayfair's visual identity into compelling, cohesive physical environments. You'll think beyond graphics to consider the entire space—materials, color, finishes, architectural moments, environmental graphics, fixtures and other brand expressions that shape how a customer experiences Wayfair in person.
You'll partner closely with Creative, Store Design, architects, project managers, fabricators and other external design partners. While those teams may own architectural documentation and construction execution, you'll help establish and protect the creative design intent—determining what our stores should look and feel like and ensuring that vision carries through from concept to built environment.
This is a highly collaborative role for a multidisciplinary designer who is equally comfortable thinking about brand and space: someone with strong visual instincts who also understands materials, fabrication and the realities of designing for physical environments.
Translate Wayfair's brand identity into physical retail environments, creating spaces that feel distinctly and consistently Wayfair.
Develop creative concepts for new stores, remodels and other physical retail initiatives, from early inspiration through implementation.
Define the creative approach for key architectural and environmental moments throughout the store, including walls, entrances, transitions, cash wrap, service areas and other customer-facing spaces.
Explore and recommend materials, finishes, color, graphics, dimensional brand elements, fixtures and other physical expressions of the brand.
Create sketches, mood boards, elevations, mockups, renderings and presentations that clearly communicate design intent.
Partner with architects and Store Design teams to integrate brand expression into architectural plans rather than applying it as an afterthought.
Review architectural drawings, elevations, renderings, material samples and shop drawings through a creative lens and provide clear design direction.
Partner with graphic designers and signage teams to ensure environmental graphics and signage feel integrated with the architecture and overall store experience.
Work with fabricators and vendors to understand material and production possibilities and evolve concepts into solutions that are beautiful, durable, scalable and cost-conscious.
Participate in material reviews, prototypes, site walks and installation reviews to ensure the finished environment reflects the original creative intent.
Help establish scalable design principles, materials and branded-environment standards that can evolve across Wayfair's growing store portfolio.
Identify opportunities to continually evolve the Wayfair store experience as our physical retail presence grows.
Travel to Wayfair stores, project sites, vendor locations and other locations as needed to participate in site walks, design reviews, installations and other key project milestones.
Approximately 5–8+ years of experience in retail experience design, branded environments, environmental design, experiential design, retail interiors or a related discipline.
A portfolio demonstrating built physical environments, with strong examples of translating a brand into space.
Exceptional visual and conceptual design instincts, with a strong understanding of brand identity and storytelling.
Experience designing across both 2D and 3D environments rather than exclusively within architecture or graphic design.
Strong understanding of materials, finishes, fabrication techniques and how design decisions translate into built environments.
Experience collaborating with architects, interior designers, fabricators, contractors and/or design-build partners.
Ability to read and respond to architectural plans, elevations and renderings; deep technical architectural expertise is not required.
Strong visualization and presentation skills. Experience with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma,SketchUp, Rhino, AutoCAD, Revit or rendering software is valuable; we care more about your ability to develop and communicate strong ideas than mastery of any single platform.
Ability to balance ambitious creative thinking with cost, durability, operational requirements and scalability.
Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate design rationale to both creative and non-creative partners.
