    Position Summary:

    The RN, Kidney Dialysis provides specialized nursing care to patients receiving hemodialysis, supporting safe, effective treatment through vigilant monitoring and skilled clinical practice. This role conducts thorough pre-treatment assessments, evaluates vascular access sites, and closely monitors patients' hemodynamic responses throughout each dialysis session. Working collaboratively with nephrologists, dialysis technicians, dietitians, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members, the RN supports coordinated care planning, patient education, and safe transitions. As part of a supportive, team-based dialysis environment, this position promotes patient comfort, treatment effectiveness, and long-term management of chronic kidney disease through precise clinical judgment and adherence to established dialysis protocols.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Perform comprehensive pre-treatment assessments, verify readiness for dialysis, and evaluate vascular access integrity prior to initiating therapy.
    • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue hemodialysis treatments according to established protocols and individualized care plans.
    • Observe patients for adverse reactions, hemodynamic instability, or complications and intervene promptly to maintain patient safety.
    • Provide patient education on dialysis routines, fluid and diet management, access care, and self-management strategies to support overall well-being.
    • Document assessments, interventions, treatment parameters, and patient responses accurately in the electronic health record.
    • Collaborate with nephrology providers, dialysis technicians, and interdisciplinary staff to support equipment readiness, infection-prevention practices, and regulatory compliance.

    Licenses and Certifications Required:

    • Current or temporary RN license in North Dakota or compact RN licensure.
    • BLS certification required within orientation period.
    • Specialty certification in area of practice is desirable.

    Educational Requirements:

    • RN program as evidenced by licensure.
    • Official diploma or transcript from the school/university from where Degree was received.

    Experience Requirements:

    • Hospital experience is preferred, but not required.

    Special Skills or Training Requirements:

    • As required by specific units.

    Physical Requirements:

    The RN, Kidney Dialysis frequently stands and walks between multiple patient stations, assists with patient positioning, and handles dialysis equipment, supplies, and tubing. The role requires bending, reaching, and lifting moderate loads when preparing machines or moving carts and materials. Adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity are essential for assessing patient status, managing vascular access, and responding swiftly to changes during treatment.

    Environmental Requirements:

    This position works in a dialysis treatment environment with routine exposure to bloodborne pathogens, chemical disinfectants, bodily fluids, and equipment alarms. The RN must strictly adhere to PPE use, safety procedures, and infection-control standards to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff. The role involves managing fluctuating treatment demands, interacting closely with patients with chronic health conditions, and maintaining focus in a setting with simultaneous treatment sessions.
