Job Summary and Qualifications

Manages all direct & indirect nursing care given to the patients within the Emergency Department to ensure optimal patient care. Will provide clinical services to patients as needed. 

Promotes and monitors department safety. 

Manages departmental products, supplies and equipment in a cost effective manner. 

Ensures the Emergency Department maintains appropriate documentation. 

Pursues professional growth through continuing education and in-services. 

Adheres to hospital policies and procedures; supports the mission of the hospital. 

Demonstrates effective leadership and management behaviors. 

Provides clear written and verbal communication to staff, lead charge personnel, patients, and families. 

Oversight of monthly staff schedule if delegated to Nurse Manager. 

Serves as mentor to staff on clinical issues and serves as a positive example to providers, employees, patients and families. 

Demonstrates clinical competence to practice within the Scope of Care for the Emergency Department. 

Utilizes quality improvement as basis to improve departmental processes. 

Implements corrective action as appropriate and per HR policies and procedures. 

Other duties as assigned or necessary. 

Conducts patient and employee rounds and immediate service recovery as needed. 

Supervises department personnel in a manner to ensure staff achieve their potential as members of an effective team. 

Assists the Director in the continual assessment and improvement of the department’s performance through monitoring and advancement of nursing quality and patient safety. 

Compiles and analyzes data in a systematic method that effectively identifies opportunities and measure improvement. 

Actively participates in hospital and community activities to promote the role of the professional nurse to recruit and retain staff as well as organizational resources. 

Contributes to the development, implementation and monitoring of operational and capital budget to ensure sound fiscal management of the department. 

Education & Experience:

Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing, BSN degree or completion of BSN degree within 48 months of hire, American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS, ACLS, PALS certification – Required

Current Licensure as an RN in the state of Virginia – Required

3 years’ experience as RN in area clinical expertise with demonstrated proficiency leadership and management skills – Required

2 years’ experience as an RN in a charge nurse role – Required

2 years as an RN in charge nurse role in the ED setting - Preferred
