Job Description: The primary coordinator for managing daily patient throughput. The goal is to improve hospital throughput of ED admits, direct admits, and surgical admits, increase inpatient bed utilization, and reduce patient or bed turnaround delays. Provides overall direction and coordination. Communicates continuously throughout the shift to ensure all hospital units and departments align with the plan. Facilitate a centralized bed management process. Functions as the ground operational lead for activities and patient flow on the assigned shift. Communicating with leadership across departments.
The Patient Flow Coordinator/Nursing Supervisor role is a unique hybrid leadership position that combines elements of nursing supervision, patient placement, capacity management, hospital operations, and throughput coordination. Unlike traditional bed management or house supervisor roles, this position serves as the central operational hub for patient flow across the organization and plays a critical role in ensuring safe, timely, and efficient movement of patients throughout the hospital.
Key responsibilities include:
• Coordinating admissions, transfers, and patient placement across all levels of care.
• Managing hospital capacity and bed utilization to support patient throughput and access to care.
• Collaborating closely with the Emergency Department to facilitate timely placement of admitted patients and reduce boarding times.
• Coordinating ICU admissions, transfers, and downgrade opportunities.
• Supporting perioperative services with postoperative bed placement, add-on surgical cases, and capacity planning.
• Serving as the primary nursing administrative resource during off-shifts, weekends, holidays, and periods of heightened operational demand.
• Leading capacity escalation efforts during census surges, throughput challenges, and operational constraints.
• Facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration among nursing units, physicians, case management, environmental services, perioperative services, and executive leadership.
• Participating in and leading operational huddles focused on patient flow, capacity management, and patient safety.
• Responding to hospital-wide operational concerns, patient placement barriers, and situations requiring real-time decision-making and escalation.
• Supporting emergency preparedness, patient safety initiatives, and organizational throughput goals.
The role requires strong clinical judgment, operational awareness, leadership presence, and the ability to make independent decisions in a fast-paced environment while balancing patient safety, operational efficiency, and organizational priorities.
One of the aspects that makes this position particularly rewarding is the opportunity to influence patient care and hospital operations at a systems level. The individual in this role works closely with leaders throughout the organization and has a direct impact on patient access, capacity management, throughput performance, and the overall patient experience.
