The Presidio Trust is seeking a Roofer to join its Building Maintenance Department. Reporting to the Trade Supervisor, the Roofer is responsible for repairing, installing, and inspecting roofs and all roof components in and around the Presidio Trust properties, buildings, and structures. Working closely with the Compliance Department on methods and techniques related to roof and roof component replacements to preserve, document, and maintain historic structures. Contributes to the maintenance, management, and preservation of Trust properties in a safe and environmentally conscientious manner.
This is a full-time position with benefits and a starting at $39.73 per hour, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. This position is included in a bargaining unit, specifically the Laborer’s International Union of North America, Local 792, United Public Employees of California. Responsibilities
- Schedule and perform roof and sheet metal repairs to buildings within the Presidio.
- Manage and oversee large roof replacement projects.
- Make leak, dry rot and other repairs on roof sheathing, beams, rafters, joists, fascia boards, etc.
- Speak professionally and respectfully to customers about roofing issues, repairs, and potential solutions.
- Conduct regularly scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance of roofs and roof components to ensure roofs are clean, flashing is tight, gutters and downspouts are clear of debris. Broom, shovel, and rake gravel on roof for proper coverage to protect membrane.
- Estimate material and labor required to complete roof repair and roof replacement projects. Regularly work with Asphalt Shingles, Clay Tile (Spanish & Flat), Slate, Roll Torch-Down Roofing, Tar & Gravel, Wood Shingles, and Raised Seam Metal Roofing.
- Provide a variety of protective coverings to roof surfaces, including different types of shingles, tiles, gravel, and other toppings.
- Install roof flashing and develop field roof flashing details for stucco, brick, wood, and shingled building envelopes. Lay material in straight lines to insure proper overlap and coverage. On built-up roofs, apply roofing felt and asphalt to obtain proper overlap and eliminate possibility of leaks.
- Use pry bars, hammers, nail pullers, and other tools to remove old roofing and other equipment, such as roofing mops and rakes, to spread asphalt and topping material. Install new roofs, including flashing, gutters, gravel guards, valleys, vents, pipes, chimneys, and other roofing accessories.
- Perform basic carpentry skills, and repair or replace sheathing, boards, beams, and joists where dry rot has been identified or it has been determined that building integrity is compromised.
- Cut and form metal accessories to meet roofing requirements, fasten them to roofs with nails or screws, solder metal joints, and cut and shape shingles to fit around accessories.
- Repair leaks after insuring that damaged areas are properly dried out and adequately prepared for repair. Match materials used to complete repairs to original roofing material.
- Open roofs and install skylights, pipes, and ventilators where the primary consideration is waterproofing.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED), AND
- Minimum of (10) ten years’ experience in carpentry, framing, painting, WITH
- Minimum six (6) (of the ten) years as a Roofer.
- Valid Class C Driver’s License.
- Ability to interpret written instructions, specifications, construction drawings, etc.
- Ability to plan and work safely and independently.
Physical Demands
Ability to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and climb ladders.
Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
