    State & Local Tax (SALT) Manager – Sales & Use Tax Advisory

    Overview

    An established and rapidly growing public accounting and advisory firm is seeking a State & Local Tax (SALT) Manager to join its expanding indirect tax practice. This opportunity is ideal for a technically strong SALT professional who enjoys solving complex sales & use tax issues, advising clients through M&A transactions, and serving as a strategic resource on multistate indirect tax matters.

    This role offers a blend of consulting, research, transaction advisory, and client-facing problem solving across a diverse middle-market client base. The position provides significant exposure to sales & use tax planning, nexus analysis, taxability studies, voluntary disclosures, audit defense, and M&A tax due diligence within a collaborative and entrepreneurial environment.

    Responsibilities

    • Serve as a technical resource on state and local tax matters related to mergers & acquisitions, including tax structuring and due diligence projects
    • Advise clients on complex sales & use tax issues, identifying potential exposures and opportunities
    • Conduct multistate nexus reviews and evaluate filing requirements across jurisdictions
    • Research and analyze state tax statutes, regulations, rulings, and case law to support client recommendations
    • Prepare detailed taxability analyses, memorandums, and matrices summarizing research findings
    • Review client operations and processes to assess indirect tax compliance risks
    • Assist clients with resale and exemption certificate procedures and documentation strategies
    • Prepare voluntary disclosure agreements and sales tax permit applications
    • Support clients with responses to state tax notices, audits, and contested indirect tax matters
    • Represent clients before taxing authorities on sales & use tax issues when necessary
    • Collaborate with internal tax, transaction advisory, and consulting teams on client engagements
    • Utilize sales tax technology and research platforms to support consulting and compliance initiatives

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
    • CPA, JD/LLM, CMI, or similar professional designation required
    • 6+ years of state and local tax experience with a strong focus on sales & use tax
    • Public accounting or consulting experience strongly preferred
    • Strong technical research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
    • Experience with M&A tax diligence and transaction-related SALT matters preferred
    • Exposure to multistate indirect tax compliance and nexus analysis
    • Experience with additional indirect taxes, income tax, or franchise tax matters is a plus
    • Familiarity with tax automation platforms such as Avalara, Vertex, or TaxJar is preferred
    • Strong communication and client relationship management skills
