    PART I: SUMMARY OF POSITION

    The Scholastic Bowl advisor is accountable for advising and overseeing the activities of the Scholastic Team. The Scholastic Team is open to any academically qualified student in grades 6-8. The Scholastic Team holds frequent scholastic activities to prepare for the state-wide competition scholastic competition. All activities are paid for through fundraising and by team participants.

    PART II: MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    A. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college.
    • Employment in this class is conditional upon possession of a valid Illinois State Board of Education teaching certificate appropriate to the teaching assignment.
    • Employment in this position requires attending WEB Training with the Boomerang Project.

    • Considerable knowledge of scholastic team activities and scholastic principles;
    • Knowledge of the State, Federal and Board policies and regulations regarding student conduct and appropriate disciplinary action;
    • Accounting, spelling and proofreading skills;
    • Coaching skills;
    • Effective, active listening skills;
    • Organizational and problem-solving skills;
    • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing;
    • Ability to work effectively with others;
    • Leadership ability;
    • Availability to work during assigned hours;
    • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

    PART III: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Adheres to Board policies and District procedures;
    • Advises and oversees all aspects of the scholastic team;
    • Assists members in developing skills that will allow them to work together as a team;
    • Attends meetings and in-service training as required;
    • Competes in at least one scholastic competition;
    • Conducts weekly meetings and associated activities a minimum of 1.5 hours each week;
    • Creates, promotes, fosters, and develops creative problem-solving skills;
    • Determines role of team officers and conducts election of team officers;
    • Encourages activities in support of school and community;
    • Encourages students to appreciate and value their classmates, school, and community;
    • Encourages students to challenge and expand their scholastic skills;
    • Ensures safety of students;
    • Establishes team goals and plans for scholastic preparation and competition;
    • Helps team plan fundraisers, team events, and competitions;
    • Interacts in a positive manner with staff, students, and parents;
    • Interacts with public in official capacity as required;
    • Maintains respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., student records, etc.;
    • Orders and maintains inventory of materials and tools;
    • Oversees and accounts for all financial activities and funds to ensure compliance with District guidelines;
    • Plans and organizes all local/school scholastic bowl meets;
    • Promotes and monitors these goals to keep the class on task;
    • Promotes good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and conversation;
    • Responds to routine questions and requests in a timely, appropriate manner;
    • Serves as a role model for students;
    • Supervises the details of all student planned activities which includes but is not limited to permission slips, transportation, fundraising, chaperones, community outreach, etc.;
    • Teaches brainstorming techniques;
    • Works with team to develop budget for all activities and events;
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
