Position Summary:
The School Bus Driver provides safe, reliable transportation for students, coaches, and staff to athletic competitions and school-sponsored events. This role exists so students can participate fully in the life of the school beyond the classroom. You operate a school bus in accordance with Federal, Kansas, and school requirements and coordinate with Transportation department so coverage of the activity calendar is timely and professional.
Primary Responsibilities
Operate a school bus to transport students, coaches, and staff to and from athletic competitions, field trips, and other school-sponsored events.
Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections and promptly report mechanical, safety, or equipment concerns.
Maintain student safety and orderly conduct while loading, in transit, and unloading, and follow school expectations for student supervision on trips.
Follow assigned itineraries, pickup and drop-off locations, and timing; communicate delays or route changes to the Transportation department contact.
Comply with all applicable Federal and Kansas CDL, school-bus, traffic, and student-transportation requirements, including Passenger (P) and School Bus (S)
endorsement rules.
Fuel, clean, and secure the assigned vehicle after each trip as directed.
Participate in safety meetings and remain available for drug and alcohol testing and background-check processes.
Coordinate with Facilities and with Athletics or the student-event sponsor on trip timing, vehicle assignment, and any student support needs.
Remain with the assigned trip, including wait time at venues, when return transportation is part of the duty.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be 21 years of age or older. Valid Kansas driver’s license. Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S)
endorsements. Wichita Collegiate School does not provide CDL training or certification; candidates must already hold the required license and endorsements. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check and remain subject to required ongoing testing. High school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated safe driving record.
Ideal candidates demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of safe passenger and school-bus operations and of applicable Kansas and federal CDL rules.
Calm, professional student supervision and clear communication with coaches, sponsors, families, and school staff.
Defensive driving, strong situational awareness, and sound judgment in changing weather and traffic conditions.
Reliability for evening, weekend, and variable event-based assignments.
Ability to complete vehicle inspections and recognize issues that should be reported before a trip proceeds.
Prior school-bus, motor-coach, or comparable passenger-vehicle experience is preferred.
Work Environment: This is a part-time, event-based driving role. Hours follow the athletic and
student-event calendar rather than a standard office day and regularly include evenings,
weekends, and occasional daytime or school-break trips. The primary reporting location is the
Wichita Collegiate School campus; driving occurs on public roads in varying weather. Physical
demands include climbing bus steps, sitting for extended periods, and assisting with safe
student loading and unloading.
Summer work may be required for camps, summer programs, or other school-sponsored trips.
Evening and weekend work is required for athletic competitions and student events.
Trip assignments may include wait time at venues when return transportation is part of the duty.
Trip coordination is with Facilities and the Athletics or student-event sponsor for each assignment.
