Description and Essential Functions
Under close supervision, provides general assistance for a limited period of time in support of assigned operations. Duties will vary based on work assignments and needs of the department. Current need is within the Public Works Department.
This recruitment is for a part-time, non-benefited position limited to 919 hours of employment in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) with an average of less than 30 service hours per work week. Unclassified hourly employees are paid on an hourly or per diem basis and shall not be eligible for benefits nor be subject to Civil Service Rules. Although hourly employees are at-will, they are still subject to all other City policies and procedures.

Essential Functions
Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: perform a variety of routine manual work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, signs, sewers, storm drains, and related structures; assist in patching City streets and sidewalks; replace street signs; paint sidewalk curbs; clean sidewalks and remove graffiti; operate a variety of hand and power tools; observe safe work methods; and perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
License: Possession of a valid California drivers license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: Principles of good customer service; basic cleaning and maintenance practices and procedures; basic methods used in the maintenance, construction, and repair related to assignment; and basic safe work methods and safety regulations.
Ability to: Follow simple instructions and exercise normal caution; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; use various tools to complete maintenance and repairs; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
When assigned to unskilled manual work: On a continuous basis walk, stand, bend, crouch or stoop; use hands and fingers to grasp tools; make repetitive hand and body motions; twist and reach below and above shoulder; verbal ability to communicate in person, use a two-way radio, and use a telephone; lift or carry weight of 50 pounds without assistance and up to 100 pounds with assistance. See in the normal vision range with or without correction; hear in the normal range with or without correction. Work is performed outdoors with exposure to a variety of weather conditions; work with exposure to traffic, noise, physical barriers, and around heavy equipment.

RETIREMENT
Part-time/temporary employees participate in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). This is in lieu of PERS or Social Security (although employees do contribute to Medicare). The City and the Employee each contribute 3.75% of the employees salary to the PARS.
SICK LEAVE
Part-time/temporary employees shall accrue sick leave pursuant to the Health Workplace, Health Family Act of 2014 (AB 1522).
