The Secure Communication Technician installs, maintains, tests, and troubleshoots secure voice and data communication systems. The role focuses heavily on COMSEC operations, telecommunications, networking, secure communication equipment, inventory control, and customer support.
Key Responsibilities
Install, program, test, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain secure voice and data networks.
Manage COMSEC materials, including ordering, pickup, storage, inventory, re-keying, and destruction.
Maintain accurate records for COMSEC materials and managed communication devices.
Process and complete customer work orders.
Coordinate with customers to ensure communication services are installed and operational.
Schedule installations, upgrades, re-keys, and troubleshooting activities.
Troubleshoot and deploy ground-level and orbital communication networks and devices.
Support specialized programs used to collect network and system data.
Review project plans and coordinate project activities.
Work with customers, managers, vendors, and other technical personnel.
Maintain required documentation, forms, and inventories.
Follow DoD, telecommunications, safety, and industry standards.
May provide after-hours emergency support.
Required Skills & Experience
Experience as a COMSEC Responsible Officer (CRO) and/or Secure Voice Responsible Officer (SVRO).
Telecommunications systems and practices.
Networking fundamentals.
Customer service.
Installation and maintenance of telephone and data network services.
Experience using telecommunications test equipment.
Knowledge of secure communication equipment such as:
SKLs
TACLANE network encryptors
Sectera vIPer phones
STEs
OMNIs
Iridium satellite phones
KIV-7M encryptors
KOV-81 encryptors
KY-100 encryptors
Strong documentation and record-management skills.
Critical-thinking and troubleshooting ability.
Ability to work independently and coordinate other team members.
Ability to work in a physically demanding environment involving climbing, standing, bending, and lifting.
Valid driver's license required.
