Security Officer

The University of Evansville invites applications for the position of Security Officer within the Office of Public Safety. This vital role supports the University's commitment to maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

The Security Officer serves as an essential member of the campus community, combining active security presence with communication and customer service responsibilities. The successful candidate will help protect University facilities and resources while providing exceptional support to the campus community.

Key Responsibilities

The Security Officer supports campus safety initiatives through patrol operations, dispatch functions, emergency response, and community engagement.

Dispatch & Communication Operations

• Serve as a central communication point for campus safety operations.
• Answer emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
• Monitor campus alarm, surveillance, and security systems.
• Dispatch public safety personnel and coordinate communications through radio and telephone systems.
• Maintain situational awareness and communicate effectively during emergency and routine operations.

Campus Security & Patrol

• Conduct routine foot and vehicle patrols of campus buildings, residence halls, parking lots, and grounds.
• Identify, report, and address potential safety and security concerns.
• Monitor facilities for unauthorized access, suspicious activity, and security violations.
• Ensure campus buildings are secured according to established schedules and procedures.
• Assist with authorized building access for faculty, staff, students, and approved visitors.

Emergency Response

• Respond promptly to medical emergencies, fire alarms, accidents, and security incidents.
• Provide assistance and support during crisis situations.
• Coordinate with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical personnel as needed.
• Follow established emergency response procedures and protocols.

Community Service & Assistance

• Provide safety escorts for students, faculty, and staff.
• Assist community members with vehicle lockouts, jump-starts, and other service requests.
• Serve as a visible, approachable resource for students, employees, and visitors.
• Provide directions, information, and assistance to campus guests.
• Foster positive relationships that support a safe and welcoming campus environment.

Documentation & Reporting

• Prepare accurate and detailed incident reports.
• Maintain daily activity logs and records of calls for service.
• Document security incidents, safety concerns, and enforcement actions.
• Ensure confidentiality and integrity of all records and reports.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective during emergency situations.
• Basic computer proficiency and the ability to use dispatch, reporting, and security-related software systems.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team while also performing duties independently.
• Strong customer service skills and a commitment to serving a diverse campus community.
• Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in campus security, law enforcement, public safety, emergency services, military service, or related fields.
• Experience operating communications or dispatch equipment.
• CPR, First Aid, or emergency response certifications.
• Experience preparing reports and maintaining detailed records.
• Familiarity with security systems, alarm monitoring, and video surveillance technology.

Working Conditions

• Requires shift work, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime.
• Position requires extensive walking, standing, climbing stairs, and working in varying weather conditions.
• May require lifting, carrying, or moving equipment.
• Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies and campus incidents.
