Security Officer (Unarmed) - Substitute / Temporary

Location: St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School – Alexandria, VA (Multiple Campuses)

Reports To: Director of Safety and Security

Classification: Temporary / As-Needed, Hourly

Schedule: Flexible shifts, based on availability and school needs

St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School (SSSAS), an independent Episcopal school in Alexandria, Virginia, seeks professional and dependable Substitute / Temporary School Security Officers to provide flexible security coverage across its three campuses.

These positions are part of an on-call staffing pool designed to supplement the school's regular security team during absences, special events, weekends, and periods of increased operational need.

Officers will be offered available shifts through a shared schedule and may accept assignments based on their availability. This is an unarmed position with no guaranteed minimum hours. Officers will work under the direction of the Director of Safety and Security and help maintain a safe, welcoming, and orderly environment for students, faculty, staff, families, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide a visible, approachable, and professional security presence on assigned campuses.
• Monitor campus activity, assist with building access control, and follow established visitor management procedures.
• Conduct routine campus patrols and report suspicious activity, safety concerns, or policy violations.
• Respond promptly and professionally to incidents, emergencies, and medical situations.
• Use verbal de-escalation and sound judgment to manage conflicts and challenging situations.
• Support student arrival, dismissal, athletic events, school activities, and other special events as assigned.
• Communicate effectively with school administrators, faculty, staff, and other security team members.
• Coordinate with local law enforcement and emergency responders when appropriate.
• Follow all school policies, security procedures, confidentiality requirements, and professional standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Prior security, law enforcement, military, emergency services, or related experience preferred.
• Virginia DCJS certification appropriate to the position, or willingness to obtain required credentials.
• Strong communication, observation, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to remain calm, professional, and composed in stressful situations.
• Sound judgment and the ability to recognize and report potential safety concerns.
• Ability to interact appropriately with children, adolescents, adults, and visitors.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation, as assignments may vary by campus.
• Successful completion of required background checks and fingerprint clearance.
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, including walking campus grounds and standing for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience in a K–12 school, independent school, or educational environment.
• Experience in security operations, access control, incident response, or emergency preparedness.
• CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, or willingness to obtain.
• Familiarity with radio communications and visitor management systems.
• Experience working collaboratively as part of a security team.

Scheduling and Availability:

This position offers flexible, as-needed assignments. Officers will be included in a substitute security staffing pool and will receive access to a shared schedule of available shifts.

Anticipated coverage windows:

• Weekdays: 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
• Saturdays and Sundays: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

These are anticipated coverage windows rather than fixed shifts. Actual assignments, hours, and locations will depend on school needs and available coverage.

Officers may select or accept shifts that fit their availability. There is no requirement to accept every available shift, although reliability and advance communication regarding availability are expected.

Hours are not guaranteed, and assignments may vary from week to week. Additional shifts may occasionally be available for special events or other school-related needs.
