Job Summary:The Senior Accountant - General Ledger owns the integrity of MEC's general ledger and balance sheet. The role runs daily cash management and bank reconciliation, closes the monthly GL (accruals, fixed assets, debt, sales tax, benefits), and delivers reconciled, review-ready financials to the Controller and VP of Finance twice a month. Success means every balance sheet account is reconciled, supported and free of stale items at each close, without being asked. The role is also expected to find and drive efficiencies in recurring work, using AI and automation to shorten the close and improve accuracy.
Key responsibilities:
Cash management (daily)
Record cash movements through journal entries in Sage Intacct.
Prepare and upload the positive pay file; review exceptions and resolve them with the bank.
Reconcile the operating and medical bank accounts.
Confirm clearing of checks and ACH payments; research mismatches and process stop payments.
Prepare the stale-dated check list for the Director of Construction Accounting.
Month-end close (monthly)
Post accruals, prepaids and reclasses; review the P&L for coding errors.
Review cost of sales to confirm every transaction is assigned to a project.
Maintain the fixed asset schedule; calculate and post depreciation.
Calculate and post interest on notes payable; maintain current and long-term debt balances.
Prepare, file and pay sales tax returns and post related entries.
Reconcile payroll benefit accounts (health, dental/vision, GAP, Colonial) to the GL.
Post corporate credit card (CSC) transactions.
Balance sheet ownership and reporting
Reconcile all assigned balance sheet accounts each month with support, and clear aged items such as stale AP and unapplied vendor credits.
Analyze P&L and balance sheet variances and present them in the twice-monthly financial review with the Controller and VP of Finance.
Prepare schedules and support for the annual audit, tax filings, and surety and bank reporting.
Process improvement and AI (ongoing)
Identify manual, repetitive or error-prone steps in cash, reconciliation and close work, and recommend improvements with the time or risk they remove.
Use AI tools to draft reconciliations, flag anomalies, analyze transaction detail and prepare variance commentary, with human review of every output.
Build and document repeatable AI-assisted workflows so the close becomes faster and less dependent on any one person.
Apply sound controls to AI use: protect confidential data, use only approved tools, and keep outputs traceable to source records.
Qualifications:
Required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
2-5 years of GL, close or reconciliation experience; construction or project-based accounting preferred.
Working knowledge of US GAAP, accrual accounting and internal controls.
Experience with a cloud ERP; Sage Intacct strongly preferred.
Advanced Excel (pivot tables, lookups, reconciliation workbooks).
Regular, practical use of AI tools (such as Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot) in accounting or analytical work.
Preferred
CPA, or progress toward it.
Experience with Procore, positive pay and multi-state sales tax filing.
Fixed asset and debt accounting experience.
A track record of automating a recurring accounting process with AI, scripting or workflow tools.
Attributes
Owns reconciliations end to end and flags issues before review.
Investigates anomalies until they are explained, not just tied out.
Able to work and communicate across functions to obtain explanations.
Asks whether there is a faster, more reliable way to do recurring work, and tries it.
Handles confidential financial, payroll, benefit and similar data with discretion.
Schedule:
