ABOUT EXTERA

Extera Building Solutions is a private equity-backed building envelope platform headquartered in Walton Hills, Ohio. Our operating companies are established, well-regarded names in commercial roofing, sheet metal, and building restoration across Ohio: Warren Roofing & Insulating, a union contractor with more than a century in business; Cleveland Building Restoration, a specialist in building and historic restoration; and Mansuetto Roofing & Sheet Metal, a roofing and fabrication business founded in 1966 in Martins Ferry.

The platform is growing organically and through acquisition, and each new company has to be brought onto one set of standards quickly and cleanly. That makes finance at Extera a different job from finance at a single-site contractor: multi-entity, project-based, percentage-of-completion accounting with real transaction exposure and a sponsor-level bar for accuracy.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Senior Accountant reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and is built as a development seat for a future finance leader. The role owns real work from day one, including assisting with month-end general ledger close, WIP and revenue recognition adjustments, AIA billing, cost accounting, and reporting, and it is deliberately designed to make the person capable of stepping in as the number two to each of four seats: the Corporate Controller, the Accounting Manager, the Treasurer, and the Billing Manager.

Working across all four functions is how this person learns the business end to end, from how a job is bid, set up, costed, and billed to how it flows into consolidated financial statements, lender reporting, and an acquisition's opening balance sheet. The role also gives direct exposure to M&A, including due diligence, purchase accounting, and integration, at a private equity platform in a sector with strong tailwinds.

Day-to-day close work follows the Corporate Controller's close calendar and standards. The reporting line to the CFO exists so the Senior Accountant can move across functions, take on platform-level projects, and be coached directly by the CFO; it does not create a parallel accounting function.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN

Month-End Close and General Ledger

• Prepare and post month-end journal entries with full support for all entities: accruals, prepaids, payroll and bonus accruals, depreciation and amortization, right-of-use lease entries, commissions, intercompany, allocations and recharges, and reclasses.
• Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly, attach support to the reconciliation workpapers, and clear open items before the books close.
• Perform bank reconciliations between Foundation (our ERP system) and the bank, record deposits and cash receipts, and resolve unmatched items.
• Maintain the fixed asset module, calculate the bad debt reserve, and reconcile intercompany balances across entities.
• Work the close to the Corporate Controller's calendar and help shorten days-to-report without giving up accuracy.

Revenue Recognition, WIP, and Project Accounting

• Prepare the monthly WIP schedule: percentage-of-completion revenue, over and under billings, estimated cost to complete, and the resulting WIP adjustments, documented so an auditor can follow them.
• Keep job cost data reliable: job setup and budget (JBU) imports, change orders, cost code integrity, and direct versus indirect cost classification.
• Run project margin, gain/fade, and closed-job analysis with project managers and flag jobs that are drifting before the month closes.
• Support the WIP review process and the controls around estimates, and help make the process repeatable across every entity, including new acquisitions.

Billing and Accounts Receivable

• Prepare and enter AIA progress billings and other customer invoices in Foundation and customer portals, including retainage and change order billing.
• Manage the paperwork that gets a contractor paid: lien waivers, certificates of insurance, customer vendor setup, and general contractor compliance documents.
• Produce weekly AR agings by project manager, track collection notes, and support collections on accounts past 90 days.
• Support monthly sales and use tax filings and the monthly commission calculation from billing data.
• Serve as the trained backup to the Billing Manager so billings go out on time in any month.

Cost Accounting

• Own the mechanics of job costing: cost code structure, labor and burden rates, equipment and overhead allocations, and the split between direct and indirect cost.
• Support shop and inventory costing for the sheet metal fabrication operation: standard costs, material and inventory transactions, physical counts, and variance analysis.
• Analyze labor rate and margin trends by division and feed the findings into operating reviews.

Reporting and Analysis

• Prepare supporting schedules for the monthly consolidated financial statements and the management reporting package.
• Build variance analysis, margin bridges, and KPI and flash reporting for the CFO and division leadership.
• Take on ad hoc analysis and special projects for the CFO, from pricing and labor questions to integration planning.

Treasury Support

• Back up the Treasurer on daily cash activity: deposits, cash application, cash reconciliations, and bank portal maintenance.
• Support the 13-week cash forecast, weekly disbursement batching, and the review and import of Ramp card transactions into Foundation.

Audit, Controls, and Process

• Prepare audit schedules and respond to auditor requests for the areas you own, with the goal of zero audit adjustments.
• Document processes and controls, strengthen review and support standards, and standardize close, reconciliation, and WIP workflows across entities.
• Become a Foundation power user across modules (job setup, budgets, billing, AP, GL, fixed assets) and a resource to colleagues who need help in the system.

M&A AND INTEGRATION EXPOSURE

Acquisitions are part of the operating rhythm here, and this role is expected to be in the room. Depending on deal timing, the Senior Accountant will:

• Support financial due diligence: pulling and analyzing target data, working capital analysis, quality of earnings support, and WIP and job cost review of the target's backlog.
• Build opening balance sheets and support purchase price accounting and net working capital true-ups.
• Help integrate acquired companies onto Extera's chart of accounts, close calendar, WIP process, and Foundation, and train their teams on our standards.

AI-ENABLED FINANCE

We expect the finance team to use generative AI and automation tools as a normal part of the work, not as a novelty. In this role that means:

• Using AI tools daily to draft reconciliations and workpapers, analyze large data sets, write variance narratives, and build first drafts of schedules and memos, then applying professional skepticism to validate every output before it is relied on.
• Finding the repetitive parts of the close, billing, and reporting cycles and automating them, with the time savings measured and reinvested in analysis.
• Staying current on how AI is changing accounting work and bringing practical ideas to the team.

HOW YOU WILL LEARN THE BUSINESS

There is no fixed rotation schedule. The Senior Accountant works alongside each of the four seats, taking on real responsibilities in each area as the business needs them and building toward the point where any of the four functions can run for a month with this person in the chair. Along the way the role touches every part of a construction finance operation: bid to job setup, job cost to WIP, billing to cash, close to consolidated statements, diligence to integration.

This is a finance leadership track. People who succeed in this seat are the natural candidates for roles such as Assistant Controller, Division Controller, Director of Finance, or integration lead as the platform grows. We do not promise a title or a date; we do promise the breadth, the exposure, and the coaching to earn one.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

By the end of the first year, the Senior Accountant:

• Closes the general ledger on the Controller's calendar every month, with every owned reconciliation complete, supported, and free of aged open items.
• Produces a documented, auditor-ready WIP schedule and adjustments on schedule each month.
• Gets billings out by their due dates and has covered the Billing Manager's seat without a missed pay application.
• Has zero audit adjustments in the areas they own.
• Can credibly back up all four partner seats and has done so at least once.
• Has automated or AI-enabled at least one recurring process with measurable time savings.
• Has contributed to at least one acquisition's diligence, opening balance sheet, or integration.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited institution.
• Four to seven years of progressive accounting experience, including at least two years in public accounting or at least three years in construction or manufacturing industry accounting.
• Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and hands-on ownership of month-end close and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Advanced Excel skills and a demonstrated habit of using generative AI tools in your accounting work.
• Clear, concise writing and the ability to explain accounting to project managers and operators.

Preferred

• CPA or active CPA candidate; master's degree in Accounting or an MBA.
• Construction accounting experience, including percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, WIP schedules, job costing, and AIA billing.
• Manufacturing or cost accounting experience, including standard costs and inventory.
• Experience in a multi-entity or private equity-backed environment, or exposure to acquisitions and integrations.
• Foundation ERP and Ramp experience.

The people who do well here are detail-retentive and closure-driven; they finish what they start, keep their reconciliations clean, and do not let open items age. They take ownership of outcomes rather than waiting for direction, handle pace and variety without losing accuracy, communicate directly even when the news is bad, and are curious about the business behind the numbers.
