Description of Job

The Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) is accepting applications for four (4) Part-Time Senior Consultant - Staff (ASL) Interpreter positions within the Curriculum, Assessment & Instruction Department.

These positions provide high-quality American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind students and staff in educational, extracurricular, and professional settings. Interpreters work collaboratively with Deaf colleagues and other interpreting professionals to ensure equitable communication access while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, confidentiality, and customer service.

Assignments may include classroom instruction, Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, staff meetings, trainings, student activities, field trips, assemblies, and other school-related events. Interpreters are expected to follow the communication preferences of each consumer, adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct, and support CSDBs Deaf-centered, Deaf-led philosophy.

This is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt, at-will position with a minimum schedule of 20 hours per week during the school calendar year. Occasional evening hours and travel may be required. Hourly compensation will be determined based on the selected candidates qualifications and experience

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Applicants must possess the following at the time of application:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with formal interpreter training.
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification or National Interpreter Certification (NIC).
  • Five (5) years of diverse professional interpreting experience (excluding educational interpreting).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Advanced Plus (Level 4) or higher, as determined by an approved assessment in accordance with CSDB policy.

Substitutions

A combination of education and experience may substitute for the bachelors degree as follows:

  • An Associates degree from a formal Interpreter Preparation Program and a combination of related education and professional experience equivalent to two (2) additional years; or
  • A combination of related education and professional interpreting experience providing the same level of knowledge, skills, and abilities (generally four (4) years of professional interpreting experience).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Colorado Educational Interpreter Authorization (or the ability to obtain one).
  • Experience interpreting in educational settings.
  • Experience working with DeafBlind individuals and/or Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDIs).
  • Demonstrated commitment to Deaf-centered, Deaf-led service delivery.
  • Native or near-native ASL fluency.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must successfully pass a background investigation prior to employment.
  • Must maintain required professional certification throughout employment.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends, and travel as needed.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • This position is designated as part-time, hourly, non-exempt, and at-will employment
