Senior Firmware Engineer

Position Summary

Our rapidly growing medical robotics division is looking for a firmware engineer who wants to make a difference. Our engineers develop surgical robots in close collaboration with top surgeons and cross-functional engineering teams. The Firmware Engineer will own embedded firmware for several surgical robotic devices and will work hands-on, with minimal supervision, alongside electrical engineers on custom PCBs.

How We Build Firmware

Our firmware is written in Rust, using Embassy on STM32 (Cortex-M), inside a shared framework whose crates are also used in our desktop software. All code lands through pull requests with code review, is built and tested in CI, and carries near-complete unit test coverage: hardware-facing code is isolated behind mocked interfaces so that all control and business logic runs and is tested on the host. You will develop new devices on this common codebase, maintain existing ones, and be expected to work within the framework and improve it.

Primary Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain firmware on ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers for new and existing surgical robotic products, within our shared Rust/Embassy framework
• Write unit-tested, reviewable code; submit and review pull requests; keep the CI pipeline green
• Abstract hardware behind testable interfaces so that device logic is verified off-target, and verify hardware-facing code on the bench against functional and acceptance tests
• Work with electrical engineers to bring up, debug, and troubleshoot firmware-hardware interactions on custom PCBs, including reading schematics and layouts
• Coordinate with the software teams that share the framework to keep interfaces, crates, and tooling consistent across devices
• Support Production / Manufacturing, internal testing, and external customers on quality and support issues; identify root causes and drive corrective actions to timely resolution
• Maintain compliance with standards typical of the medical industry (IEC 60601-1, IEC 62304)
• Represent the company in a professional manner and uphold the highest standards of ethical business practices and socially responsible conduct in all interactions with other employees, customers, suppliers, and other third parties of Globus

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
• Firmware development on Cortex-M in a compiled systems language. Rust strongly preferred; strong modern C++ with a demonstrated interest in Rust is acceptable, and we will train you
• Daily use of git with branch, pull request, and code review workflows
• Experience writing unit tests for embedded logic, including abstracting hardware so that logic runs and is tested on the host
• Comfortable building, debugging, and running tests from the command line and in CI, independent of a vendor IDE
• Experience reading custom PCB schematics and layouts, with solid electrical fundamentals
• Experience with serial and bus protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART/RS-232/RS-485, USB, CAN
• Ability to work independently and as a key contributor in a small team
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; motivated self-starter with good time management and organizational skills
• Ability to travel up to 10% of the time

What We Will Teach You

Embassy and async Rust on embedded targets, our framework and shared crates, our CI/CD pipeline, and the IEC 62304 development process. Open-source contributions or personal embedded Rust projects are welcome as evidence of interest and are a strong plus at any experience level, including recent graduates.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with motor control algorithms (FOC, six-step, etc.)
• Experience with FPGA development
• Experience in the medical device field or other regulated environments
• Experience developing firmware under IEC 62304

Not a Fit

This role is not suited to candidates who prefer vendor IDE-centric workflows without version control, automated builds, or automated tests.
