Location: Remote
Hours: Preference for candidates who can align with Mountain or Central Time business hours and provide flexibility when needed for outages or critical operational support.

Position Overview
Marathon Petroleum is seeking a Senior Infrastructure Architect – Platform Engineering to join its OT Compute team. This is a senior, hands-on architecture and engineering role responsible for designing, implementing, administering, modernizing, and continuously improving enterprise compute platforms supporting critical Operational Technology (OT) environments.
This individual will serve as one of the senior technical resources embedded directly within the platform engineering team. The role requires someone who can provide architectural leadership while remaining actively involved in design, implementation, automation, troubleshooting, and operational support.
The environment is primarily on-premises, with VMware/vSphere supporting the current production environment. Marathon is also continuing to modernize its infrastructure through Linux/KVM, Infrastructure as Code, automation, CI/CD, and additional virtualization and compute technologies.
A significant portion of the initial engagement will focus on infrastructure lifecycle management, including hardware standardization, supportability tracking, inventory governance, refresh planning, platform upgrades, technology-risk identification, and operational maturity improvements.
The successful candidate will approach infrastructure as a long-term platform rather than a collection of individual technology deployments, balancing immediate technical requirements with scalability, reliability, maintainability, supportability, security, automation, and operational sustainability.

Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Architecture & Compute Platform Engineering

Design, implement, administer, and support enterprise compute infrastructure supporting OT workloads.
Develop architecture and technical solutions for highly available and mission-critical infrastructure environments.
Deploy and maintain physical server infrastructure across data center and remote-site environments.
Design, implement, and support virtualization platforms, including VMware/vSphere and Linux/KVM.
Remain hands-on throughout implementation, configuration, troubleshooting, and operational-support activities.
Perform infrastructure upgrades, migrations, remediation efforts, and modernization initiatives.
Troubleshoot complex production infrastructure issues and perform root-cause analysis.
Evaluate future compute and virtualization technologies as Marathon's environment continues to evolve.

Infrastructure Automation & Modernization

Identify opportunities to automate manual infrastructure provisioning and operational activities.
Develop and improve Infrastructure as Code (IaC) capabilities.
Work with technologies such as Terraform, Ansible, Jinja2, Git, and related automation/configuration-management tooling.
Help develop and mature CI/CD pipelines supporting infrastructure deployment and management.
Integrate compute infrastructure with monitoring, configuration management, patching, security, compliance, and incident/outage-response capabilities.
Help reduce manual processes and improve infrastructure consistency, repeatability, and scalability.
Support Marathon's continued evolution beyond its current heavy dependence on VMware into Linux/KVM and other compute or virtualization technologies.

Lifecycle Management & Standardization

Support lifecycle planning for enterprise compute hardware and virtualization platforms.
Develop and maintain standardized hardware configurations and approved platform offerings.
Identify risks associated with aging infrastructure, unsupported technologies, and platform lifecycle status.
Lead or support server hardware refresh and infrastructure modernization initiatives.
Improve inventory accuracy, supportability tracking, and lifecycle visibility across the compute portfolio.
Contribute to lifecycle governance practices and operational reporting.
Design platforms with long-term maintainability and operational sustainability in mind.

Platform Operations & Continuous Improvement

Develop and maintain engineering standards, operational procedures, and technical documentation.
Improve monitoring, automation, reporting, and visibility across compute platforms.
Drive standardization and improved operational maturity.
Identify opportunities to improve platform reliability, scalability, supportability, security, and operational efficiency.
Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and operational-readiness activities.
Support continuous improvement initiatives throughout the OT Compute portfolio.
Develop infrastructure processes that can operate effectively at enterprise scale while supporting internal security, regulatory, and compliance requirements.

Technical Leadership

Serve as a senior technical resource embedded within the platform engineering team.
Provide architectural and technical recommendations regarding compute platforms, virtualization, hardware standards, lifecycle strategy, automation, and operational improvements.
Collaborate across Windows Services, Networking, Cybersecurity, Architecture, and Operations teams.
Mentor and upskill engineers in infrastructure architecture, Linux, automation, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, and engineering best practices.
Participate in technical evaluations, solution-design activities, and future-state infrastructure planning.
Balance architectural decision-making with hands-on engineering and implementation.

Required Qualifications

7+ years of infrastructure engineering and architecture experience.
Strong hands-on experience with enterprise on-premises compute infrastructure.
Strong experience with VMware/vSphere in enterprise production environments.
Experience with Linux infrastructure and meaningful exposure to KVM virtualization.
Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and supporting production infrastructure environments.
Strong understanding of enterprise server hardware architecture and infrastructure lifecycle management.
Experience with Infrastructure as Code and infrastructure automation, ideally including Terraform and Ansible.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated infrastructure deployment practices.
Experience planning and executing infrastructure upgrades, hardware refreshes, migrations, or modernization initiatives.
Experience troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues in production environments.
Ability to independently architect, design, implement, support, and continuously improve infrastructure solutions.
Experience developing engineering standards, operational procedures, processes, and technical documentation.
Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership and mentor other engineers.
Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
