Advertised Job Summary Senior Instructor Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior The Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior (HPEB) at the University of South Carolina (USC) Arnold School of Public Health invites applications for a Senior Instructor position. This is a new full-time, 9-month instructor position that would start no later than Fall 2027. The position will involve teaching and supporting core in-person and online undergraduate course instructional needs of the department and planning and implementing student development and peer-mentoring initiatives, including curriculum development and revision, assessing student learning, and efforts to strengthen undergraduate education. The faculty and students in HPEB focus on understanding how policy, environmental, institutional, community, and individual actions improve the publics health. Potential courses that would be taught include HPEB 300: Planning Health Promotion Programs; HPEB 321: Personal and Community Health; HPEB 470: Principles of Global Health; HPEB 471: Social Determinants of Health; HPEB 488/489: Food Systems; HPEB 502: Applied Aspects of Human Nutrition; HPEB 547: Consumer Health in Contemporary Society; and HPEB 553: Community Health. The teaching load is three courses per semester (Fall and Spring) with the opportunity for summer teaching. The instructor will also contribute to departmental, school, and university service activities, including participation in committees and initiatives that support students, faculty, staff, and communities. USC provides a rich interdisciplinary environment, with faculty across the Arnold School and campus contributing to initiatives such as the Global Health Initiative, Nutrition Consortium, Prevention Research Center, Office for the Study of Aging, Consortium for Latino Health Studies, Big Data Health Science Center, and SmartState Centers. The University has been designated by the Carnegie Foundation as a "doctoral institution with highest research activity" and a "community-engaged institution." Department faculty contribute substantially to teaching in the Arnold Schools BS and BA public-health undergraduate degree programs. In addition, the Department offers two undergraduate minors, masters programs including an MPH and online professional MPH, a doctoral PhD program, and graduate certificates in aging, global health, and health communication. USC is located in Columbia, South Carolina, a vibrant capital city offering abundant cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities. Columbia enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine annually and provides ready access to beaches, lakes, rivers, and mountains. The city hosts historical and cultural attractions, festivals, performing arts and sporting events, parks, and outdoor recreation, including Congaree National Park and 50,000-acre Lake Murray.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Required Education and Experience Qualifications include a minimum of an earned masters degree in public health, health behavior, or a related social-science field (a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline); experience teaching and mentoring in a higher education setting; and a working knowledge of the available community partners in public health. In addition, the candidate must have the equivalent of five years of full-time teaching experience in higher education and evidence of effective instruction with in-person and online modalities.
