Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to provide technical leadership and engineering oversight for industrial projects.

This individual will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and quality of engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and project deliverables while maintaining project schedules and budgets.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience designing instrumentation and control systems within chemical, refining, petrochemical, and specialty chemical manufacturing environments. This role requires a strong technical background, project leadership capabilities, and the ability to coordinate engineering and design teams across multiple disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead instrumentation and controls engineering activities for industrial projects.
• Maintain a strong understanding of digital and analog control systems, including regulatory and supervisory process control design.
• Develop control philosophies and coordinate engineering activities between instrumentation, controls, and other engineering disciplines.
• Prepare engineering work-hour estimates, installed cost estimates, budgets, and project schedules.
• Monitor and report engineering and design progress to ensure projects are completed efficiently, accurately, and on schedule.
• Coordinate with clients on instrument specifications, control philosophies, P&ID development, control systems design, and distributed control system wiring.
• Supervise engineering and design team members, including Client planning and scheduling of engineering activities.
• Provide technical guidance, engineering oversight, and quality reviews of design team deliverables.
• Serve as a working engineering discipline leader, supporting both technical execution and project delivery.
• Coordinate with plant personnel, construction teams, and other project stakeholders on domestic and international projects.
• Work with local authorities to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, permitting requirements, and industry standards.
• Support the development and integration of instrumentation and control system installation scopes of work.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering related to Instrumentation and Control Systems from an ABET-accredited program.
• 10–15 years of experience in engineering design, preferably in a project lead engineer capacity.
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• Previous field engineering or construction site experience.
• Extensive experience designing instrumentation and control systems for chemical, refining, petrochemical, and specialty chemical facilities.
• Experience preparing instrument specifications, loop sheets, wiring diagrams, datasheets, and related engineering documentation.
• Strong background with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS), including:
  • Allen-Bradley
  • Emerson DeltaV
  • Yokogawa
  • Client
• Experience with control system architecture, network diagrams, control equipment specifications, and system integration.
• Experience with detailed engineering design, P&ID development, instrumentation design, and control equipment specifications.
• Knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards, including ISA, NFPA, API, ASME, and OSHA.
• Experience developing subcontractor scopes of work for instrumentation and controls installation, including system integration requirements.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and other relevant engineering software applications.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

Work Location & Schedule

This position is based in Tampa, Florida, and offers a hybrid work arrangement. The successful candidate must be able to work onsite at the office as required, with additional flexibility for remote work based on business and project needs.
