Senior Java / Spring / Kafka Engineer (547)

Johnson Service Group (JSG) is currently looking for a Senior Java Backend Engineer with 8+ years of Java backend development experience and strong expertise in Spring Boot, Apache Kafka, and AWS. Our client is seeking a Senior Java Backend Engineer to build and migrate scalable, production-grade backend services and event-driven applications to AWS. (Hybrid, 3 days/week, offices across continental US)

Must Have skills

• 8+ years of production Java backend development experience, including modern Java 17/21.
• 5+ years of Spring Boot/Spring Framework experience, including Spring Data and Spring Security.
• 5+ years of hands-on Apache Kafka experience, including producers/consumers, partitioning, consumer groups, schema evolution, and troubleshooting.
• 3+ years of production AWS delivery experience with EKS or ECS/Fargate, MSK/Confluent Cloud, VPC, IAM, RDS/Aurora, S3, CloudWatch, and related AWS services.
• Experience leading at least one end-to-end on-premises to AWS migration involving multiple services and Kafka.
• Infrastructure as Code experience using Terraform or AWS CDK.
• Experience with Spring for Apache Kafka/Spring Cloud Stream and Schema Registry with Avro or Protobuf.
• Strong Java performance troubleshooting skills using JFR, thread dumps, heap analysis, or async-profiler.
• Strong technical documentation and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Build and support production-grade Java/Spring backend services and Kafka-based applications.
• Migrate on-premises applications and Kafka workloads to AWS.
• Develop and maintain AWS infrastructure using Terraform or AWS CDK.
• Support Spring Boot/Spring Framework modernization and migration initiatives.
• Implement Kafka schema management and CI compatibility processes.
• Troubleshoot application performance, latency, and production issues.
• Collaborate with application teams and produce ADRs, runbooks, and migration documentation.

• Role requires hands-on production AWS and migration experience.
• Contract Rate Range- $65-75 USD/hour
