Spherion Mid Ohio is partnered with a growing Ashland, Ohio manufacturer seeking a
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. This is a newly created position driven by company growth and an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer who wants more than a desk-bound design role.
This person will have the opportunity to take real ownership of projects, work through complex customer applications, collaborate directly with sales and manufacturing, and see designs move from an initial concept all the way through production and into the field.
Salary: $100,000–$120,000
Schedule: First shift, Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM
Location: Ashland, Ohio | On-site
Additional Compensation: Bonus eligible
Travel: Occasional domestic customer-site travel, expected to be less than 20%
What You'll Be DoingAs the
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll take the lead on complex mechanical design and product-development projects while serving as a technical resource to customers, sales, manufacturing, and other members of the engineering team.
Your responsibilities will include:- Taking customer needs and concepts and developing practical, production-ready mechanical solutions
- Leading mechanical design projects from concept through production release
- Creating 3D models, assemblies, production drawings, tolerance schemes, and bills of material
- Performing engineering calculations and making technical decisions related to performance, capacity, safety, reliability, cost, and manufacturability
- Supporting prototypes, testing, validation, and design improvements
- Troubleshooting production, field, and customer issues and developing corrective solutions
- Working closely with sales to understand complex applications and custom equipment needs
- Partnering with manufacturing, purchasing, quality, suppliers, and customers throughout the design process
- Incorporating motors, bearings, shafts, power transmission components, sensors, guarding, controls, and other machine components into equipment designs
- Supporting product improvements, standardization, modular designs, and value-engineering efforts
- Participating in formal design reviews and helping identify technical or safety risks before release
- Providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers as the engineering team continues to grow
What We're Looking ForWe're looking for someone who has already developed a strong foundation in
machine or industrial equipment design and is comfortable owning work without needing constant direction.
Ideal candidates will bring:- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field; equivalent hands-on experience may also be considered
- 7+ years of mechanical design or product-development experience, with approximately 10 years being an ideal target
- Experience designing industrial machinery, automation equipment, packaging equipment, robotics, material-handling systems, fabricated equipment, custom machinery, or similar products
- Advanced 3D CAD experience; SolidWorks is preferred
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including fabrication, machining, sheet metal, welding, fasteners, bearings, shafts, motors, and power transmission
- Experience taking designs from concept through drawings, BOMs, prototyping, testing, and production
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical partners
- Experience with design for manufacturing, machine safety, risk assessment, PDM/ERP systems, configurable products, or value engineering is a plus
Strong mechanical design experience within other machinery and equipment environments can translate very well.
