The current vacancy exists in the Community Development Department. The Senior Plan Checker reports directly to the Deputy Building Official and will be responsible for reviewing complex building plans and submittal documents for code compliance. Incumbents will be tasked with overseeing the plan review process from start to finish for the most sophisticated submittals the department receives, including consulting with design professionals and hosting project meetings with applicants. The incumbent will work a 9/80 schedule: 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Fridays, with every other Friday off.
Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in a "for-cause" employment status, and are represented by the Stockton City Employees Association. (Classified/Represented)
This recruitment is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Under general supervision, performs skilled work involving the review and examination of building construction, improvement and repair plans and specifications for compliance with applicable building and health and safety codes and regulations; and performs related work as assigned.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Senior Plan Checker is the advanced level in the series and performs plan checking on more complex projects including major commercial and industrial developments and may provide lead supervision over subordinate plan check personnel. Assignments are varied and allow for the exercise of considerable judgment and independence in the performance of plan check work. This class is distinguished from Supervising Plan Checker/Structural Engineer in that the latter is a professional engineer or licensed architect and has first-line supervisory responsibility for the plan checking function.

Senior Plan Checker: Equivalent to a high school diploma and four years of increasingly responsible experience as a Plan Checker performing comprehensive building construction plan check work in a municipal or related government agency at a level equivalent to the City of Stockton Plan Checker II, in which incumbent has demonstrated competence in reviewing a variety of complex building and life safety systems.

THE EXAMINATION
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include oral and/or written test(s) or evaluation of training and experience weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination.
