Senior Principal Electrical Designer

Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior Principal Electrical Designer with extensive industrial design experience to oversee electrical design and drafting activities for large or multiple concurrent projects. This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary design efforts while ensuring high-quality project deliverables.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical design and drafting activities for industrial projects from concept through detailed design.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of designers to ensure deliverables meet project schedules, client requirements, and quality standards.
  • Prepare and review detailed electrical drawings including HV/LV systems, lighting layouts, grounding and earthing systems, cable routing, electrical equipment layouts, and installation details.
  • Develop single-line diagrams, wiring and control schematics, cable schedules, substation layouts, switchyard layouts, and AC/DC distribution panel drawings.
  • Perform point-to-point reviews and quality checks on complete electrical design packages.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary coordination meetings and 3D model reviews.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers.
  • Coordinate project execution activities and ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes, standards, and company procedures.
  • Support site activities including panel audits, field walkdowns, and verification of electrical installations as required.
  • Deliver projects within established schedules and budgets while maintaining high-quality standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Extensive experience in electrical design and drafting for industrial or EPC projects, including experience leading design teams.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD.
  • Experience with SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL), SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), and MicroStation.
  • Experience with SmartPlant 3D (SP3D); AVEVA E3D experience is an asset.
  • Strong experience preparing:
    • HV/LV single-line diagrams
    • Lighting and power layouts
    • Grounding and lightning protection systems
    • Cable tray and cable routing layouts
    • Substation and switchyard layouts
    • Electrical equipment layouts
    • Wiring and control schematics
    • AC/DC distribution panel drawings
  • Experience with cable schedules, cable sizing, cable tray sizing, cable pulling calculations, and lighting calculations (AGI32 or similar).
  • Strong knowledge of electrical design standards, codes, QA/QC processes, and multidisciplinary project coordination.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience serving as a Lead Electrical Designer or Discipline Lead on industrial projects.
  • Proven ability to manage project deliverables, conduct design reviews, mentor junior team members, and coordinate directly with engineering teams and project stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting projects in Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Chemical, Power Generation, Mining, Manufacturing, or other heavy industrial sectors.
