At McFarland Johnson (MJ), we’re more than infrastructure consultants, we are a 100% employee-owned firm with 80 years of commitment to delivering innovative planning, engineering design, environmental services, technology and construction solutions that make a lasting impact in the communities we serve.

We're looking for an experienced Engineering Project Manager to join our growing Aviation and Infrastructure team in Buffalo, NY. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys leading projects, working directly with clients, and wants to play a bigger role in shaping a region, not just delivering work. This role has a clear path to Regional Director for someone who’s interested in stepping into a broader leadership role.

If you’re driven to build client relationships, lead multidisciplinary teams, and shape the future of aviation and infrastructure, including Civil/Site, Structural, and Airport Building projects, we want to connect.

Why Join Us?

  • Career Growth: Accelerate your professional career with opportunities to lead, learn, and expand your expertise.
  • Collaborative Culture: Work alongside multidisciplinary teams that thrive on creativity, support, and teamwork. Collaborative is the most frequent word used to describe MJ’s culture in the annual employee survey.
  • Employee Ownership: As a 100% ESOP, your contributions directly shape our shared success – you own your future.
  • Innovation & Impact: Work on projects that push boundaries, drive sustainability, and create real-world solutions.
  • Professional Development: From mentorship, ongoing technical training, and conferences, we invest in your growth every step of the way.
  • Work-Life Balance: Enjoy flexible schedules, generous PTO, and a culture that values balance so you can thrive both professionally and personally.
  • Shape the next generation: For experienced professionals, MJ offers the chance to mentor emerging talent, share your expertise, and leave a lasting legacy in the industry.

Why This Role is Different

  • Leadership Trajectory: Clear path to Regional Director with influence over strategy, growth, and team development
  • Diverse Project Portfolio: Aviation (airside & landside), airport buildings, civil/site development, and structural systems
  • Entrepreneurial Platform: Opportunity to help build and shape MJ’s Western NY presence
  • People-Centric, High-Performance Culture: Collaborative, growth-focused, and built on long-term success

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver complex, multidisciplinary projects across the public and private sectors of aviation, civil/site, and/or structural disciplines
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, building long-term relationships and identifying growth opportunities
  • Manage project scope, schedule, and budget while ensuring technical excellence and quality delivery
  • Guide and mentor engineers and technical staff across teams
  • Play a key role in business development, including proposals and client engagement
  • Partner with leadership to expand our footprint in Western NY and the Northeast
  • Represent the firm at industry events and within key aviation/infrastructure organizations

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in project management (aviation, transportation, civil/site, structural, or similar)
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and deliver complex projects
  • Experience working on airport projects, including terminal facilities, is a plus
  • Interest in client relationship management and business development
  • Familiarity with the Northeast market, including funding sources
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in NY (or ability to obtain)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (ABET-accredited) or related field

Benefits & Perks

  • $120,000 - $165,000 base salary with performance-based incentive payment plan/bonus structure.
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Generous Paid Time Off, including Parental Leave.
  • Company-funded ESOP + 401(k) employer match.
  • Ongoing technical training and professional development opportunities.
