Senior Software Engineer (Onsite) — Huntsville, AL

Type: Contract-to-hire
Work schedule: 40 hours/week
Security clearance: Active Secret clearance or ability to obtain
Pay rate: $117-125/HR

Overview

We’re hiring a Senior Software Engineer to lead and build software for tactical/mission-critical defense systems. You’ll help design modern, modular software frameworks and support software products ranging from analysis/simulation tools to mission planning and other critical system components. This is a hands-on technical leadership role with real impact.

What you’ll do

• Provide technical leadership for a team of 5–15 software engineers
• Define full-stack architecture and design patterns for missile-system applications (guidance, navigation, control, telemetry, mission planning)
• Lead technical/design/code reviews to ensure quality and compliance
• Make key technical decisions on tools, frameworks, and development approaches
• Act as a primary technical partner to government stakeholders and program leadership
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers
• Drive open systems architecture and MOSA (Modular Open Systems Approach) adoption
• Support flight test operations and post-test analysis
• Ensure compliance with safety, cybersecurity, and RMF-related standards

What we’re looking for (must-haves)

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Software Engineering, CS, CE, EE, Aerospace, Math, or similar) with 3.0+ GPA
• 12+ years relevant experience (or 10+ with a Master’s)
• Active Secret clearance or ability to obtain one
• Proven experience leading software teams on complex, multidisciplinary work
• Strong knowledge of open systems architectures and MOSA
• Expert-level C/C++
• Experience with Python and Java
• Experience with real-time embedded systems / RTOS (e.g., VxWorks, FreeRTOS)
• Strong communication skills (able to present to senior leaders and government stakeholders)

Nice-to-haves

• Defense, aerospace, weapons, or embedded missile systems background
• Open architecture frameworks (e.g., FACE, OMS, SOSA)
• Containerization/microservices (Docker/Kubernetes) and CI/CD
• MBSE / SysML
• Standards like DO-178C or MIL-STD-882E
• MATLAB/Simulink
• Prior Software Lead / IPT Lead / Technical Lead experience
• Agile Scrum Master / Product Owner experience
