Senior Substation Electrical Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Substation Electrical Engineer for a long-term contract opportunity with our client in Reading, PA. This position will provide engineering and technical support for the design of high-voltage substations and switchyards operating at 69kV and above.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in substation physical design, electrical system studies, equipment specifications, and project execution. This role requires the ability to work independently, lead complex engineering assignments, and collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and perform substation physical design for new substations and switchyards, expansions, and modifications to existing facilities.

• Develop engineering drawings, including site plans, equipment layouts, general arrangements, plan and elevation views, grounding, conduit, lighting, lightning protection, shielding, and control building arrangements.

• Design and specify AC station service, DC systems, auxiliary electrical systems, and associated equipment.

• Prepare technical specifications, bills of material, and procurement documentation.

• Perform electrical system studies, including load flow, short circuit, voltage drop, protection coordination, ampacity, and battery sizing.

• Conduct grounding, lightning protection, insulation coordination, bus sizing, transformer sizing, fault current, and auxiliary system calculations.

• Support project proposals, cost estimates, scope development, and technical presentations.

• Collaborate with project managers, electrical designers, civil/structural engineers, and field personnel to ensure successful project execution.

• Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, quality, and compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.

• Serve as a technical lead on complex projects, providing engineering guidance and resolving design challenges.

• Perform independent technical reviews and audits of engineering work.

• Mentor junior engineers and support the development of engineering team members.

• Interface directly with clients and project stakeholders to address technical requirements and project objectives.

• Ensure engineering deliverables are completed on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with project procedures.

• Travel to project sites as needed to conduct field walkdowns and support engineering activities.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.

• Minimum 8 years of experience in substation design, including high-voltage substations operating at 69kV and above.

• Strong experience in substation physical design, electrical calculations, equipment specifications, and engineering documentation.

• Experience with power system modeling and analysis software such as ETAP, CYME, or SKM.

• Thorough understanding of applicable electrical engineering codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

• Experience working on multidisciplinary engineering projects.

• Ability to independently manage complex engineering assignments and provide technical leadership.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.

• Experience developing engineering estimates, technical proposals, and project scope documents.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant engineering design software.

• Ability to work effectively with engineering teams, project management, and external clients.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States.

• Previous experience serving as a Lead Electrical Engineer on high-voltage substation projects.

• Experience mentoring junior engineers and reviewing technical deliverables.

• Strong background in utility, transmission, and power infrastructure projects.
