Senior Underwriter | Inland Marine & Cargo

An established insurance business with approximately $151 million in business and an A- AM Best rating is expanding into new specialty markets. With offices in Detroit and New Hampshire, the organization is building out new underwriting functions and is seeking a Senior Underwriter to lead its inland marine and marine offering. The role is fully remote.

The role

You will shape and grow an inland marine and marine product, with responsibility for driving new business and helping build the underwriting function. The portfolio may include inland marine, cargo, ocean marine and related lines, depending on your expertise and the organization’s appetite.

Responsibilities

• Lead underwriting strategy and new business production across inland marine, cargo, ocean marine and related lines.
• Develop broker and producer relationships, identify target markets and actively pursue new opportunities.
• Evaluate submissions, assess exposures, structure coverage and terms, and price risks in line with the organization’s appetite.
• Help define the product offering, underwriting guidelines, workflows and tools as the function is established.
• Monitor portfolio performance and market conditions, adjusting underwriting decisions and growth plans as needed.
• Collaborate with leadership and internal partners on reinsurance, capacity and portfolio development.

Experience

• Ideally 6–10 years of underwriting experience in inland marine, cargo, ocean marine or closely related lines.
• Demonstrated success generating and underwriting new business.
• Strong technical knowledge of relevant marine exposures, coverages and market conditions.
• Experience building a book, launching a product or helping establish an underwriting function is highly valued.
• Reinsurance experience is helpful, but not required.
• Strong broker-market relationships and the ability to work independently in a remote role.
