ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Join a multidisciplinary engineering team focused on advancing materials, manufacturing processes, and supplier capabilities for next-generation nuclear reactors. This role is responsible for developing and qualifying welding processes for reactor core components, supporting materials testing programs, and working closely with suppliers to mature critical technologies.

This is an opportunity to work on challenging materials and joining applications involving high-performance alloys, nuclear quality requirements, and long-term component reliability.

What Youll Do

  • Develop and qualify welding processes for reactor core internals.
  • Lead weld process development and qualification activities for ferritic-martensitic steels, austenitic stainless steels, and other advanced alloys using technologies such as resistance pressure welding, TIG/GTAW, and laser welding.
  • Create and maintain welding specifications, procedures, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Review engineering drawings and documentation to ensure proper welding requirements and callouts are applied.
  • Work directly with suppliers to improve manufacturing capabilities and increase the technology readiness of critical materials and components.
  • Oversee welding operations used to produce test coupons for process qualification and materials testing programs.
  • Develop destructive and nondestructive examination requirements used to qualify and certify welds.
  • Apply materials engineering principles to evaluate material behavior and support development of performance models.
  • Develop test plans, specifications, procedures, and requirements for qualification programs.
  • Oversee test programs for qualification of welds such as mechanical properties, burst testing, thermal creep, creep-fatigue, neutron irradiation, thermal aging, and sodium exposure
  • Analyze test data and prepare technical reports documenting results and supporting reactor design decisions.
  • Collaborate with engineering, materials, testing, and supplier teams to ensure development efforts align with program objectives.
  • Support supplier audits and quality activities in accordance with ASME NQA-1 requirements.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline with at least 6 years of relevant experience; or Masters degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong understanding of metallurgy, fabrication processes, and thermomechanical processing of ferrous and nonferrous alloys.
  • Experience working with materials such as ferritic-martensitic steels, stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, or similar high-performance engineering materials.
  • Experience developing technical requirements, specifications, statements of work, and supplier work scopes.
  • Ability to provide technical direction and oversight to external suppliers and manufacturing partners.
  • Experience working within structured quality environments such as NQA-1, ISO 9001, AS9100, or similar quality systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on technically complex projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with welding process development, qualification, or joining technology.
  • Experience supporting materials testing and qualification programs.
  • Familiarity with nuclear reactor systems and the impact of operating environments on material performance.
  • Knowledge of nuclear industry codes, standards, and quality requirements.

This position is well suited for engineers with backgrounds in welding engineering, metallurgy, materials development, manufacturing process development, or advanced materials qualification who are interested in supporting the deployment of next-generation nuclear energy technology!
