    Build, lead, and innovate in sheet metal fabrication

    Picture this: you arrive on the floor, complete safety checks, bring two core machines online, and set the tone for the shift. You mentor a junior mechanic through a setup change, post fresh performance metrics, and push a continuous improvement idea that cuts scrap. By close, the equipment shuts down cleanly, the 5S zone looks sharp, and quality is exactly where it should be. That’s a day in the life of a Mechanic I at BAC—an hourly role with outsized influence, grounded in doing the right thing in the right way and guided by Earning Trust, Embracing Responsibility, Showing Courage, and Driving Innovation.

    Core responsibilities

    • Own safety—for yourself and the team—by following procedures and using the proper PPE at all times.
    • Start up, run, and shut down two primary machines (e.g., Laser, CNC, Press Brake) to maximize quality and throughput.
    • Complete daily/weekly maintenance checklist sign-offs to keep machines reliable.
    • Enforce quality/process standards and deliver on scrap reduction goals.
    • Train and mentor junior mechanics; lead when Station/Team Leadership is unavailable.
    • Grasp departmental KPIs; explain them to others and post updates as assigned.
    • Handle accurate paperwork and digital entries for the department.
    • Document processes to capture knowledge and accelerate training.
    • Maintain 5S discipline across the work area.
    • Engage in continuous improvement projects and problem-solving.
    • Advance new safety initiatives and improvements.
    • Produce to exacting quality standards; coach others on precision practices.
    • Champion sustainability by cutting waste, maximizing recycling, and minimizing energy/water use.
    • Turn original ideas into better processes, systems, or services.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by plant leadership.

    Team, scope, and career impact

    Reporting to a Team Leader, Station Leader, or another supervisor, you’ll provide hands-on leadership and mentorship every day. As a recognized subject matter expert, you may also support regional project teams and step into leadership roles as needed.

    Expertise you bring

    • Qualified on two major fabrication machines, including Laser, CNC, and Press Brake.
    • Ability to lead small groups and positively influence performance.
    • Clear, concise writing for process documentation and professional correspondence.
    • Skilled verbal communication with customers and coworkers; technically accurate guidance.
    • Expert knowledge of the sheet metal FAST program.
    • Blueprint/drawing reading and interpretation.
    • High-level familiarity with BAC models and parts.
    • Math fluency: arithmetic operations, fractional math, and fraction-to-decimal conversion.
    • Use of tape measure, micrometer, and protractor with confidence.
    • Foundational maintenance and troubleshooting skills.
    • Minimum 1 year as a Sheet Metal Fabricator.
    • Continuous improvement tools and root cause analysis experience for quality issues.
    • Knowledge of hazards tied to cranes, fixtures, and other safety-sensitive areas.
    • Documented commitment to safety and standards adherence.
    • MS Excel and MS Access skills for updating data and generating metrics in pre-formatted spreadsheets.
    • Adaptability across multiple department stations; comfort with change.
    • Experience collaborating on cross-functional teams to achieve plant goals.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.The working environment includes lifting up to 50lbs. Standing is to be expected up to 80% of the time. Additional activities include: walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and sitting. Fine hand manipulation of controls is needed as well as hand eye coordination to perform changes. Working hours can include any of three shifts and generally are scheduled for forty hours a week. Some weekend overtime is to be expected. Working temperatures include both wide fluctuations within the plant as well as ambient outside temperatures.
