    Job Description

Step into the Yard, Shape the Future

Picture a place where generations of shipbuilders pass down craft, precision, and pride — more than 25,000 strong — delivering the world’s most formidable naval vessels. At HII, we are the sole designer, builder, and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of only two builders of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. From skilled trades to AI/ML experts and systems architects, our people collaborate across 135+ years of innovation to keep our seas secure.

    Your Day-to-Day

You’ll be the architect of in-house welding instruction for field support teams and customers. Mornings might find you interviewing technical experts to capture new procedures; afternoons refining course content and building training aids; and late day facilitating hands-on sessions in the lab. You’ll track outcomes, tune lesson plans to evolving requirements, and keep every detail technically current. When depth calls, you’ll bring in specialized trainers and orchestrate their contributions.

    What You Will Own

    • Plan, design, and coordinate comprehensive product and process training for weld-focused shipbuilding work.
    • Gather source information from SMEs and field data to create accurate, up-to-date materials.
    • Develop course objectives, methods, and assessment criteria; build practical training aids.
    • Deliver engaging training sessions and evaluate effectiveness to drive continuous improvement.
    • Continuously revise lessons to reflect new standards, procedures, and technologies.
    • Leverage technical trainers as needed and ensure program cohesion.

    Qualifications

    Required baseline:

    • Bachelor's degree with 6 years of progressive professional and/or supervisory experience; or
    • Master's degree with 4 years of relevant experience.

Equivalencies that can substitute for the bachelor’s degree:

    • Apprentice School graduate
    • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
    • Associate's degree (or other formal 2-year program) plus 2 years of relevant exempt experience or 4 years of relevant non-exempt experience
    • Military experience at paygrade E-5 or above
    • High School/GED plus 4 years combined Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military, or other relevant exempt experience
    • High School/GED plus 8 years combined Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military, or other relevant non-exempt experience

    Preferred: A strong welding background.
