Shop Assistant (Floating Technician)

Donald Smith Company is hiring a full-time Shop Assistant (Floating Technician) in Headland, AL.

Donald Smith Company is a family-owned and operated water well drilling and pump repair company that has been in business for over 80 years.

As a Shop Assistant (Floating Technician), you’ll work alongside an experienced mechanic and learn how to keep trucks, equipment, and field crews ready to go. This is a hands-on role where no two days are exactly the same. You may help with repairs, pick up parts, pressure wash equipment, change tires, operate a forklift, or head out with a field crew when needed.

You don’t have to know everything coming in. We’re looking for someone who is dependable, hardworking, willing to learn, and comfortable doing a little bit of everything. If you pay attention, work hard, and build your skills, this position can provide a path toward a career as a mechanic or field technician.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Shop Mechanic with repairs, equipment tear-downs, and preventive maintenance
• Move, stage, and organize tools, parts, and equipment
• Load and unload trucks and trailers for crews heading into the field
• Pick up and deliver parts and materials as needed
• Wash, pressure wash, service, and prepare trucks and equipment
• Change tires and assist with basic vehicle and equipment maintenance
• Operate a forklift to move materials and equipment
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop
• Take out trash and assist with general shop upkeep
• Help with inventory and keep tools and equipment organized
• Assist field crews when needed
• Fill in wherever the shop or company needs an extra set of hands
• Follow all company safety procedures and instructions

Qualifications

• Hardworking with a strong work ethic
• Dependable and committed to showing up and getting the job done
• Mechanically curious and genuinely interested in learning
• Comfortable working with your hands and performing physical work
• Able to take direction and switch between tasks throughout the day
• Willing to help wherever needed
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record
• Able to lift 50+ pounds repeatedly and remain on your feet throughout the workday
• Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check

Preferred Experience — Not Required

You do not need years of mechanical experience to be successful in this role. The right attitude, work ethic, and willingness to learn are more important.

Experience with any of the following is a plus:

• Automotive or diesel repair
• Farm or heavy equipment
• Shop or maintenance work
• Basic hand tools
• Forklift operation
• Tire changes
• Pressure washing
• General mechanical or construction work

Hours & Travel

• Monday–Friday
• Home every night
• Primarily shop-based with minimal travel
• Occasional field service and breakdown response may be required
